I applied for all of my jobs in person from age 14 onward. My most recent employer hand carried an offer to my home in Dec 1991. It was a good arrangement for 33 1/2 years. The company changed over time. Internally, I was recruited from one contract to the next. No need to pursue a new position. What is different now is the austerity theme hitting all parts of the company due to federal government cutbacks. It's difficult to land a new position with anyone due to budget cutbacks. My age and salary band further limited my opportunities. Having paid maximum social security for the last 40 years and having consistently contributed to my 401k, retirement at age 68 is fine. I also have to consider that my cancer may return and cut short the retirement. No point in working until the day I die.
