In the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has become a household name, but recent data reveals a telling pattern in its usage that underscores the tool’s controversial role in education. According to a report from Futurism, published on August 8, 2025, OpenAI’s platform experiences significant drops in activity during weekends and summer months—periods when schools are typically out of session. This fluctuation suggests that a substantial portion of ChatGPT’s traffic may stem from students using it for homework assistance, or more pointedly, cheating.
The numbers are stark: usage plummets by as much as 20-30% on non-school days, aligning closely with academic calendars. Industry analysts interpret this as evidence that ChatGPT isn’t just a productivity booster but a crutch for academic dishonesty. Educators have long voiced concerns, and this data provides empirical backing, highlighting how AI tools are infiltrating classrooms in ways that challenge traditional notions of learning and integrity.
I’ll bet they’re not laughing now.;-)
Schopenhauer:
“All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; Second, it is violently opposed; and Third, it is accepted as self-evident.”
Sometimes I think he wrote those lines just for me.
Lol.
She was there. I taught her how to use AI to create free study material. And it isn’t simply regurgitating answers to a test. With every question and answer, it’s providing links to all sorts of study materials to explain why the answer is what it is, provide context, and go beyond simple memorization of facts. I’m glad she asked.
AI can be a huge asset if you use it right.
And in my opinion, you take the exam as soon as possible BEFORE you study too much. Establish a baseline and learn areas of emphasis before pouring hours into studying the wrong stuff.
I have no idea regarding her core competency. I don’t work with her.
There will always be be cheaters. It doesn’t make the tool wrong though. Just the lazy person using it.
Hinting?
Agreed.
I use AI daily to analyze companies and financial markets. My productivity has exploded and I do work that was once impossible for me.
While I recognize AI lies on a path that could one day lead to our destruction, I choose to use it to expand my thinking and my work.
Lazy people and cheaters are doomed before they begin. It’s like those who saw the computer and the internet only as ways to make life softer, rather than as tools to expand human understanding.
Hard to find an honest search engine
I noticed that too.
“Hard to find an honest search engine.”
You can say that again, it is absolutely true. And because of AI monitoring them it is even getting worse. I have been noticing games the last two months with search engines. Take DDG, It is blocking their own hot link forwarding from their own results to certain sites that fall into controversial content. It shows them, but you can’t click it and go there.
I have to copy the link and then go throw it into a new tab and bypass DDG to get there. It will not just hot link from the first results page. So they are censoring their own search results and purposely making it more work to go to these sources.
And this information control is just the beginning. They plan to reshape human history and knowledge with these AI tools... They are going to create an alternate reality. Here is one for you...
A very knowledgeable tech peer of mine now suspects that AI is even building fake websites on the fly already filled with controlled information to satisfy your current search query. So it presents you with a fake site rather than a real site.
Is this tech possible? Absolutely...

I have run into this recently. Obvious.... driving me away from tech.
I have my tech down to just communications on two websites. The FR and our own domain. I now invest all my “tech” time researching and dialing in secure “underground” communications and “Alternets” that cannot be meddled with. I still use searches but I have to use all my tricks to jump through the hoops to find what I need.
I even have to manually edit URL/paths/ and use the hidden metadata “/feeds” to get what I need. They haven’t blocked these feeds yet because they want Search Engine crawler bots to still get the content. It is now called the dead internet for a reason. It is on it’s last breath. It will be useless pretty soon...
Therein lies the problem. These students don’t consider using a program lot generate their entire paper as “cheating.” After all, they entered their idea into the generation box.
I disagree. I’ve written code for over 40 years. I’ve never had a tool or class that taught me so much (regarding coding) in so short a time. My daughter failed a certification test. I pasted her scores for each module into AI and had it develop a 25 question study guide on each module, weakest to strongest, with links to explanations of each answer for further study.
That’s what I did to learn about AI.. I told Claude Desktop to put together a list of AI job interview questions that I had to answer, and make them progressively harder, and if I missed a question or didn’t answer it to its satisfaction, I would fail and I would have to start all over again. So in a way it’s like a game.
It can be a wonderful tool for learning if you use it the right way.
