Academy Award-winning director Mel Gibson's sequel to what many consider to be the greatest and most financially successful faith-based films of all time — "The Passion of the Christ" — has finally been given a significant update. And it's good news for fans of Gibson and the original film.
"The Passion" isn't just getting one sequel, but two, both of which will be released within months of each other. Lionsgate Films announced the release on Wednesday. "The Resurrection of the Christ" will be released in two parts.
Part one will hit theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027. Part two will be released six weeks later on May 6, 2027. The latter date marks the celebration of Ascension Day, which is when the risen Christ returned to heaven, where He was crowned King of Kings and took His place at the right hand of the Father.
The film was first announced on May 15. Lionsgate revealed it would be partnering up with Gibson's Icon Productions to make the two sequels.
“For many, many people across the globe, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” Adam Fogelson, the current chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, remarked in a press release about the partnership.
Gibson, speaking on his partnership with the studio, said, “Lionsgate’s brave, innovative spirit and nimble, can-do attitude have inspired me for a long time, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect distributor for ‘The Resurrection of the Christ.’”
When the first film hit theaters in 2004, it made a staggering $80 million on opening weekend against a budget of only $30 million.

So am I.
From what I hear, he’ll be reprising the role of Jesus.
Excellent!
I’m with you.
Not to mention underrated!
I remember reading about the reaction in theatres — in the scene after Jesus was nailed to the cross, and the soldiers raised it and dropped it into the hole, the camara panned to Jesus flinching as the impact jarred his nailed hands and feet.
Someone in the theater shouted “Sh*t, that’s TOO MUCH!”
Jim Caviezel also had outstanding performance in the TV series, Person of Interest” - a topic quite relevant in today’s surveillant society.
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
5 seasons
IMDb rating of 8.5

Just the be anal retentive be the civilization depicted in Apocalypto was Mayan. I had the privilege of visiting various Mayan sites in Guatemala and Honduras.
I understand the timing, but six weeks is not enough space between sequels. Should rethink that.
Yuck I can’t stand Mel Gibson movies, excuses to be gory. Suggest the gore, don’t exaggerate it, gore porn. Mel is a sadist.
I guess they will use “de-aging” effects on Caveizel, 2 decades later
I just went looking the other day to watch this series again. It’s been a few years since I rewatched it. No free streaming anywhere.
Maybe there won’t be any gore in the resurrection sequel movie. Unless the one after that is about the persecution of Christians.
I remember seeing Passion of the Christ in the movie theater.
At the end, it was deathly quiet.
People walked out with tears in their eyes.
It was intense!
I won’t be going to a movie on Good Friday.

Excellent show - Mrs. BBB333 watched the series last year and have just started season 1 again.
Caviezel plays a good guy with a gun to help the good, even if it means a few bad guys get shot in then legs...
We have Amazon Prime so that is where we stream it.
Well, if you’re going to condemn the movie without even seeing it, then you’ve got a problem. I don’t know about his other movies, but this one brought to life what happened and it SHOULD move you and be hard to take. The crucifixion was no walk in the park for Jesus.
Gore notwithstanding what Jesus went through for us was probably far worse than what The Passion of the Christ shows.
Bkmk
He’s way too old. He’ll be 57 in September. Jesus died at 33. There are plenty of actors that are of Jesus’ age. That’s if they want accuracy in the film.
Why is it taking so long?
