Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. revealed that he is taking action to prevent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) users from purchasing items such as sugary drinks.
Kennedy pointed out that while people can make their own decisions regarding what to buy and what not to buy, taxpayers in the United States “should not pay” for people on SNAP to purchase items like sugary sodas.
The comments from Kennedy were made as he and U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary joined Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins in celebrating the signing of six new SNAP state waivers, which would “amend the statutory definition of food for purchase and end the subsidization of popular types of junk food beginning in 2026,” according to an HHS press release. States signing the new SNAP waivers include West Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Other states, such as Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Idaho, and Utah, have previously signed SNAP waivers. …

It’s not what can be purchased, but what taxpayers are made to purchase for someone else. That’s the government coercion involved.
The problem is forcing others to pay for you to eat crap.
Since America is going third world, I’d go third world on the food program.
Anyone who registered for the program would get a rice cooker.
They could get say 5lbs a rice per person per month.
For cereal, they could get oatmeal.
Maybe corn flakes for a cold cereal.
Powdered milk and powdered eggs.
Some flour and sugar.
Meat, poultry and fish would be rationed.
You get the drift.
The program was to keep hungry people from starving.
I see folk use whatever you call the card and most NEVER been hungry in their life.
But now they fat and they sassy.

I’m sorry... but I don’t know what you’re referring to.
I would prefer that they cut back on the eligibility for food stamps. People who are way into the middle class are eligible. Banning “junk food” purchases are fine, but it doesn’t get to the root of the problem - way too many people on food stamps who don’t need to be on them.

That, I agree with. I got really tired of watching people pay for full grocery carts of good with EBT cards, and then loading them into brand new SUVs. They could afford a new car but not their own groceries?

I hear ya. I’d have a list of a couple dozen inexpensive and nutritious foods supported. If they need it, they’ll be glad to have it.
But many carts I see have more expensive total soda costs in them than steak costs.

Another way is to sell the EBT card to someone for half price. The buyer doubles their food budget and the seller gets cash for anything they want.

OK, wait a second... “Getting SNAP” is a whole different argument from “what you can buy with SNAP.” I am actually in trouble around here every time the SNAP issue comes up because I share EXACTLY what you just shared in that statement. It absolutely makes me sick how many want to completely eliminate SNAP altogether and let folks starve to death rather than cut into their Indian Casino money...
But with that said, WIC has been an extremely successful program mothers and infants truly need that did not and has not blossomed into more government control. The restrictions have worked well and saved on residual health care costs substantially. If they are going to steal tax money from me against my will it should at least be spent wisely...
Wish we had more control over what Congress spends our money on... SNAP is needed, most other things they spend our money on are not... Like corporate welfare for the Military Industrial Complex and Big Pharma.
