It’s just a silly ad. Both sides are making much ado about nothing.

The company has had many ad campaigns. The “Great Jeans” ad campaign is the company’s latest. The commercial with Sweeney (I still have no idea who she is) was probably only the first one in the “Great Jeans” campaign.
The company probably had other ads planned with other models talking about their “jeans.”

Remember Brooke Shields’ Calvin Klein Jeans commercial: “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”
That’s what these American Eagle ads remind me of.
Just found out that Brooke Shields was in another Calvin Jeans commercial where she talks about genetics and natural selection and the “survival of the fittest...” (she’s talking about jeans):
