Sophie Cunningham Calls Out WNBA Over Treatment of Caitlin Clark
Athlon Sports ^ | July 30, 2025 | Cole Sullivan

There’s no question that Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is one of the faces of the WNBA. But since entering the league out of Iowa, the attention she’s drawn has clearly made her a target among many of the league’s established players.

That spotlight has seemingly brought added intensity and competitiveness her way. And while Clark has been sidelined for much of the year due to a series of injuries, this week her teammate Sophie Cunningham—who signed with the Fever this offseason—spoke out, saying the WNBA’s treatment of Clark has gone too far.

“You’ve seen players in our league try to toughen up Caitlin… even when I wasn’t on her team,” Cunningham said. “I know the talks Phoenix had in the locker room—like, ‘We’re gonna show her what the WNBA really is.’ I get it to a certain extent. That’s how you treat any rookie coming into the league. But it’s just more with her.

“This is her second year, and now being on her team and seeing it up close—like, what are people doing? It’s just too much. Too much.”

I know sports are quintessentially “American” but everything from the NFL to the Olympics to more minor sports have just become so commercialized and have lost their…soul?

Mostly I blame gambling and analytics.

College football has been desroyed by TV money. A “super conference” of the Big 10 and SEC would not be college football, it would be junior NFL. And this is coming from a long-time Big 10 fan.

I call it the Welfare NBA—subsidized by the NBA—otherwise they would have gone out of business long ago...

and best of all they have been protesting for higher wages when their net present value is a negative number.

That means they should be paying the league to play.

Yep. I think that the NFL should bring back NFL Europe. So you can get paid instead of having to play NCAA football.

Sad for college sports too indeed.

It’s not just the games themselves, but the announcers - their commentary and how they speak, the fandoms…Everything’s so corporate! And I don’t like the High Def screen resolutions either.

I sound like such an old fogie but am a millennial 🫢

“ESPN classic” was a refuge but now that’s gone too!

Link below is from documentary “Red Army” about the Cold War era Soviet hockey team. What’s also missing nowadays especially in terms of global sports is genuine national pride. Like Lake Placid “Miracle on ice.” (1980)

Happy the US one, but the Russians really are a vibe:

It sort of depends.

The sport that’s been least infected by culture is hockey. The biggest impact here has been fights - they just aren’t as common. And yes, analytics plays a part of that.

Basketball is 3-pointers. Yawn. Bring back Dr J, please.

Baseball is the second leading cause of boredom in adults, behind golf. Games take forever nowadays.

Football remains the most infected by culture AND one of the best games. Each Sunday is a masterclass in strategy. Thankfully the kneeling is over but the damage was done.

10 Years Later: The Brutal Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom [LegalInsurrection.com, January 8, 2017]

A chilling act of brutality largely ignored by national media because of racial implications

You probably have not heard the names Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.

Torture-Murder Victims Brutally Killed In ‘Worst Crime’
Saw Case Derailed By Shocking Court Secret [Oxygen.com, Nov. 5, 2020]

But I remember those names, and the tears that were brought to my eyes when I heard about what happened to them.

On January 7, 2007, the young white couple - Channon was 21, her boyfriend Chris was 23 - was abducted, beaten, raped, tortured, and murdered. Chris eventually shot to death before being set on fire, and Channon left to die with a plastic bag over her head in a trash can. The perpetrators were all black.

If you have not heard their story, it’s because the racial nature of that black-on-white crime was uncomfortable for the national media a decade ago. Even now, it’s uncomfortable, as the delayed and reluctant coverage of the Chicago tortures showed.

Basketball is 3-pointers. Yawn. Bring back Dr J, please.

You score more points by taking 3s. Anyone can practice and become a good 3pt shooter.

Baseball is the second leading cause of boredom in adults

It used to be that you can bunt and steal in baseball. But you can't do that anymore. You'll get a walk. Then the next batter will hit a home run. Or a strike out. Three true outcomes.

Football remains the most infected by culture AND one of the best games.

Even there, you can see that the league is protecting the QBs. I get that. But they're taking advantage of it. Especially Mahomes.

Dr. J was amazing to watch. The younger fans have forgotten him unfortunately.

He was supremely talented but also a team player and conducted himself with sportsmanship and class.

The egomaniacs, attention whores, and soft selfish players of today could learn a lot from him.

The WNBA won’t do anything until Caitlyn gets the same treatment the white couple got when a black mob violently attacked them on the street. Actually in not sure the WNBA would even do anything about that if it happened. They would make excuses and say it’s part of the game.

I don't blame them. They're getting paid. They don't really care about the game. So they're not "hungry".

Before Bird and Magic, most NBA players had off-season jobs.

Oh, you are totally right on the points you made. The quantitative analysis drives these points home. In addition, the players want to extend their careers; if I’m getting paid millions playing basketball, I’m not risking my livelihood by driving to the basket.

The funny thing about the QB protection - and I say this as a biased Eagles fan - was that America LOVED watching Mahomes get clobbered. I liked the interceptions more, but then I love pick 6 defense. Parenthetically, I didn’t mind the Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show. It wasn’t a borderline X-rated affair, and the choreography was fine.
