We don’t have tarantulas on east coast, but we do have Brown Gray Fishing Spiders which if you didn’t know better, you’d think they were tarantulas... on Cocaine! Had one run across a poster on my wall once, so loud it woke me up. Got up, spotted the dang thing. Was carrying its egg sac. Creepy as all get out tried to smack it with a slipper, but those suckers are fast! Missed. Tried several times till finally got it.
They loved to hang out in dirty laundry a lot. You’d pick it up to throw in washing machine and one would run across your hands. Jumped several times over the years.
But still better than living in Australia where their spiders kill folks and are aggressive I guess

My friends told me about the tarantula march, where there were so many on the road it looked like the road was heaving.
When we had our first home built in DFW, there was one hanging around the outside of my house. We gave each other a wide berth and it eventually moved on.
They used to crawl into my husband’s shop at work on occasion. Those buggers could jump several feet. His crew didn’t play around. They would water jet it out ASAP.
You are correct. Haven’t seen one in years. Fire ants are annual pests unless you get a pest control treatment.
I’ve been in AZ for almost 30 yrs and I’ve never seen one in my house or nearby. I grew up in SoCal in the high desert and never saw one there either. I’d pry have a heart attack if I did, my arachnophobia is that bad.

Also you gloves and any apperal that has not been in a bag. Scorpions love such places. Their sting is quite painful but does not last long. The sting of some wasps last a long time.
I have no problems with Tarantulas.
Supposedly some people have them as pets. You don’t have to worry about them chewing up the furniture or crapping on the carpet.
We used to shoot them in the middle with BB guns and all the legs would fly off.
I loved the old Sci-Fi movies from the 50s as a kid. If my memory serves me correct a Saber Jet made a strafing pass over the giant spider and just pissed it off. Jana Fraley and I would go down to the double feature Matinee. We were kids in the days of innocence.

I just drove through that area coming back from DC last weekend!
“Willimantic” is a code word I share with a good friend...whenever we see each other, one can just say “Willimantic” to get a grin from the other!
It is a silly sounding name!
