See new posts Conversation MLB Scoring Changes @ScoringChanges 🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨

This is really crazy from the @whitesox at @Cubs . Ian Happ is on second, Nico Hoerner on first. Hoerner is back-picked and gets into a rundown. Happ goes and takes third and attempts to score, and a rundown ensues there. Happ runs into the third basemanColson Montgomery and scores.

This is correctly ruled an obstruction error on Mongtomery as Happ ran into him and he didn't have the ball. But there are is SO MUCH MORE.

You credit assists to the catcher (Edgar Quero), first baseman (Miguel Vargas), second baseman (Lenyn Sosa) and pitcher (Mike Vasil).

What needs to be determined is this ... Hoerner is picked off, but both runners successfully advanced a base, and based on the OS Manual, I think both should get a stolen base. Happ's advancement of home would NOT have been a stolen base, so it cannot be a caught stealing, and the defense abandoned the attempt to get Hoerner out.

Had Happ tried to take home because it was undefended, then this would be a caught stealing, but he's not doing that. He also didn't overslide to third and wasn't able to get back so he attempted to escape by going forward. Happ however, once he went to third (and that's where the initial throw from the first baseman should have went ... he was dead to rights) he never hesitated in trying to score.

Honestly, this is going to keep the @EliasSports folks awake tonight, but I think this is a stolen base for each guy. This is a tricky one.

Ian Happ scoring a run in the most awesome way possible!

Unless you have the ball, you can't be in the runner's way -- and, uhh, apparently he can run you over too.

Final score here: Cubs 5, Sox 4, meaning that run was the game-winner.

Jot this one down as another highlight for the Cubs and another lowlight for the Sox.

Glad I wasn’t the umpire. Or fielder.

Love it. Really good co-ordination for the most part.

Wow! I’m confused. Nobody was out, why would any defender get an assist? Why was he awarded home when he was hit by a thrown ball trying to regain third base? Even if it were interference, why would he be awarded home when interference occurred while trying to reach third? What’s this nonsense about never hesitating trying to score?

The obstruction was that a fielder without the ball blocks the runner from reaching the bag. The fielder on third didn’t have the ball, was standing right in the baseline, in between the runner and the base. Clear obstruction.

The penalty for obstruction is that the runner gets one base beyond the last base touched. Since the last base touched was third, he gets home.

Doesn’t matter which way you are running.

Baseball, as all sports do, have some really arcane rules if you dig deep enough into the rule book.....................
