It is true that Catholics (e.g., Fr. Maximilian Kolbe) and Protestants (e.g., Dietrich Bonhoeffer) also died in concentration camps, but this was largely for their role in anti-Nazi activities, not necessarily because of their religion per se. But there is no doubt whatsoever that Jews were the primary target of the Nazis, and it is criminal to obscure that fact,
Of course the NEA wants to teach the founding of America as a violent act of dispossession, genocide and enslavement, white Christian greed and superiority victimizing people of color.
That’s the given. What they can’t bring themselves to do is teach anything good about the founding and evolution of America.
I doubt they address the Islamic conquest, or the Mongols, or the Inca, or the Aztec, or the Zulu in any kind of critical fashion - in any way that says this is what humans are like, all of us, descended from conquerors, rapists and murderers, and from some of their victims. Now where do we go?
The NEA gets nothing from me except for my extreme disrespect. When I get any mail from that accursed organization, it goes right into my recycle trashcan. For trash it is.

Getting rid of the NEA would be a good start, IMHO. Teaching kids the way non-corrupt, non-totalitarian government works... or should work... and letting them know what to look for when government is not working as it should be working, and possible ‘tips’ on how to fix it, would be another. Instructing them and informing them on the real history and the pittfalls associated with that history and lessons learned from it, yet another. None of that has been taught for decades, if at all.
The right way is to say “6 million Jews and approximately 6 million others.”
One might then go on to mention who the “others” were—especially Poles, Russians and Serbs! And that the murderers of Serbs were mainly Croats rather than Germans!
The NEA is NOT big on education, unfortunately!

As long as it remains a fact that the nazis specifically targeted the Jewish population for destruction, and actually managed to wipe out approximately two-thirds of the European Jewish population, then the NEA should probably stop trying to rewrite history.
Is it possible that the various numbers of different belief systems affected by the Holocaust was not mentioned because of the NEA beliefs? It’s time that the NEA was thoroughly investigated. I was thinking that something along this line had already been mentioned.
Isn’t it Slavic peoples, who were systematically killed to the tune of about 11M? Granted, some of that was in village massacres rather than camps, but I’m not sure the distinction is that salient.
The reality I think is that the crimes of the Nazi state extended to various peoples and creeds, and in each instance the Nazi state intended the extermination of each of these ‘undesirables’. Predisposing one of those groups over the others, honestly, doesn’t seem right to me.

I think the rewriting of history, or at least what the public schools taught about it, changed a long time ago
