It was the send off that Ozzy Osbourne had hoped for, if some time before he and his loved ones expected.

The Black Sabbath star died today aged 76, surrounded by his wife Sharon and their children after a battle with Parkinson's.

A heartbreaking statement released by the family said: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning.

'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.'

Sources close to the family say that his passing was 'unexpected to be this soon' but that his children were so grateful to have been around him in his last days after he performed his final gig just over two weeks ago.

Heavy metal hellraiser Ozzy, known to legions of fans as The Prince of Darkness, passed away at the Buckinghamshire mansion where his wife Sharon - a former X Factor judge - had spent at least two years preparing for his final moments.

The Mail can also reveal that daughters Aimee, 41, and Kelly, 40, were there to care for him as recently as last week after flying in from Los Angeles.

Son Jack, 39, also had flown from his home in Idaho to watch his beloved father at his last concert at Aston Villa's stadium Villa Park on July 5.

A loving, endearingly quirky family. Prayers for them.

"Unexpected"?

Is this a joke? Decades ago, doctors were perplexed as to how his body could sustain his drug and alcohol abuse.

It would not surprise me to one day be told by Sharon, that Ozzy died as a result of assisted suicide. His ending weeks seemed highly organized and encompassing of his friendships, almost Bucket-List style. If this happened, perhaps the couple kept that info private, instead of risking that someone would try to stop it from being carried out.

I didn’t want to be the first to say it but I’m shocked he lasted this long.

at his Buckinghamshire mansion

The rumor mongerers on X are trying to claim without any evidence that Ozzy snuck off to Switzerland and died by assisted suicide.

I don’t think I would want to enter the next life with the title “Prince of Darkness”.

Ozzy was my first concert, with Motley Crue opening up for them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I was 13 and went with a friend and his older brother. Awesome show.

“assisted suicide”

I suspect that’s how it went down.

Parkinson’s can be caused by drug abuse.

A friend in the movie industry told me about a famous actor who suddenly developed Parkinson’s at age 35 after consuming some cocaine that had a contaminant.

I have seen young people with brain damage from pesticide contaminated marijuana as well as impure meth.

God is probably OK with it since he theoretically invented everything after asking Chuck Norris's permission.

I never expected Ozzy Osbourne to live as long as he did...

Then there’s Keith Richards....

Forty years ago I was at Live Aid- incredible day...

Black Sabbath w/Ozzy Osbourne played at 10 in the morning- they were great...

What really took me as a 22YO kid was how Ozzy kept singing “GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!” during Iron Man...

But the members of Black Sabbath were actually talking about perhaps still recording new music, if not touring.
