A fiendish New Mexico sheriff’s deputy has been placed on leave after video emerged of him fatally hurling an adorable baby bunny against the side of his car while smiling.
Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Alejandro Gomez, 27 was seen in cell phone video recorded by other cops pleading with a fellow deputy to hand over the sweet baby rabbit the group had found in the dirt outside of Hachita, New Mexico last August, the Albuquerque Journal reported.
In the video, posted to Facebook Monday, a group of officers are pulled over to the side of a dusty road where they find a baby bunny about the size of a grapefruit.
“Promise you’re not going to kill it,” the deputy said, shielding the bunny in his hands, “Swear to God.”
“I swear to God,” the 27-year-old replied. “Give it to me right now.”
After resisting, the animal-loving deputy finally relented when Gomez threatened him with a stun gun.
Video showed the light of the gun, indicating a target, illuminating the side of the law enforcement officer.
Gomez then takes the rabbit in his right hand, looks directly at the camera, and hurls the helpless creature into the side of the car.
The videographer of the animal snuff film, an unidentified corporal in the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, laughed hysterically at the brutality.
The 27-year-old is charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon upon a peace officer and one count of extreme cruelty to animals, which is a fourth-degree felony, the Albuquerque Journal reported.
Both the sergeant and the corporal who witnessed the rabbit killing and Gomez threatening his fellow deputy are still employed, with neither being placed on leave despite their failure to intervene, the State Police said, according to the report.

Agreed.
Read the post again. I'm not ignoring it.
The reason we have rabbits is that I cut trees and brought back palatable forage rabbits can eat. We got too many rabbits as a result, so many that their den went down the hill.
So, oh wise and humane one, what would be the best way to manage wild rabbits so that other wildlife has food to eat? Sometimes such measures can be harsh, to which humans typically harden themselves habitually. To those who have done so or grew up that way, people who get all worked up about a bunny can look silly. Was the response of others what prompted his laughter as opposed to taking joy in killing the bunny? Do you know, or are you projecting that upon him? I don't pretend to know, nor should I pass judgment until I do know more.
All I'm pointing out is that a news story clearly meant to portray the officer as a monster, and as you have so concluded, may not be the best way to arrive at a judgment deeming it appropriate to deprive his family too, if you feel so entitled, which I suspect you do.
If an animal is just sitting there doing nothing at all, not in the roadway or being an obstruction, not injured…then it should be left alone. If it isn’t demanding your attention, don’t give it any. In this case, the first wrong move (IMHO) was for an officer to pick up the bunny
Agreed.
Harsh as nature can be, that’s the best option.
So you think his lying to the office, threatening him with a taser, and then making a big joke out of killing the rabbit is OK?
Because you’re still ignoring that aspect of it.
Unless you yourself think killing wildlife is a big joke and laugh about it.
The article isn’t written to make the guy look like a monster. It’s reporting what happened and has video and photos of it. If the guy comes across as a monster, that’s his own doing. He brought it on himself by acting like one.
Rabbits are vermin, he can be replaced by one of 300 siblings.
The issue is what we have learned about the deputy, not about rabbits.
The deputy revealed something about himself that means he should not be in law enforcement.
“Those that laughed and helped should be disciplined along with the perp. But the sweeping judgment against all cops is way off.”
Thanks for stating that. Too many folks are blinded too far on one side or the other. You have the folks that think cops can do no wrong, and others that think they can do no right.
My perspective is that it is a local issue. A specific Sheriff’s department or city might have significant issues, while others are generally on the up and up.
I do, though, judge a group by the most unsavory behavior they tolerate. If this department has decided not to discipline the corporal, then I consider it rotten from the top. And if the one cop isn’t fired, put on the Brady list, and prosecuted for the taser action, I would add the entire county leadership to the rotten list.
My biggest concern is when we went from Andy Taylor to the tatted, steroided, militarized, “citizens are the enemy” culture, then we also started to see acceptance of behavior like this.
Not sure what the full answer is, because it is not just the police. It is a culture issue that includes parenting, schooling, the justice system, _and_ policing. Hopefully we can continue to have this conversation as a society and make things better.
Starts from the top. Trump is a good leader and good will flow from him. Good state governors will cause better police as well.
“You say your relatives were also bad?”
First let me say that my Father and my Uncle were LE back when it was truly “Serve and protect” in the 60s and 70s. But before they got out of LE they were already personally disgusted with the direction it was going and were glad to be rid of it. They were embarrassed by what it had become. My son in law turned down several opportunities to be out on the street as a patrol SO because he didn’t want to be involved in what he already KNEW was going on. He chose to stay a county detention officer instead until he retired.
“As a tow operator, you worked with cops for years? With? So you made money off these vile individuals for years and stuck with it, presumably never calling them out on their despicable nature? For decades? Lots of money?”
Was I supposed to quit my business because of the officers being crooked? Let me tell you something. I never accepted a tow unless it was honest and above board. If I knew I was NOT next up on the rotation list and it should have belonged to another company I would flatly turn it down. Every time I was approached by officers who would try to make deals with me for “more tow business” from them I refused to agree.
Now lets talk tow collusion. It is the most crooked schemes there is when it comes to Law Enforcement. You would not believe how crooked it really is. I fought against collusion my whole life in the industry. Here are some of the games they play...
I have seen officers brag about how they pulled over and found a reason to impound a vehicle because they personally wanted that vehicle. Being towed at the owners expense gave them a shot at ending up with it through the tow company “buddy” if the owner could not afford to get it out.
I have seen officers help their tow friends using “officers discretion request” calls to manipulate tows. They can bypass the next company up on the tow list at their own discretion (at my discretion this company is the only one who can handle this call). Or they lie and claim the vehicle owner requested that particular tow company “by owner request” even though the vehicle owner had no clue the company even existed. When the call should have went to the next company up on the list.
I have seen officers allow a tow company to turn down a call or claim all their trucks were busy so that they do not end up with an abandoned vehicle tow which another tow company will have to tow for free at their own cost. This burns a rotation call for the second company while the first company is put back on the list for a new call that does actually pay.
I have seen officers make friends with one tow company and practice all of the above to help put other competing tow companies out of business. I was one of the few who fought against the rigged system and ran my company honest. And it was a fight, I had to fight tooth and nail to even stay in business because I refused to play the collusion game.
The officers compensation from these crooked tow companies? Vehicles, Engines, Wheels and tires, and even cash. I literally walked in on two cash exchanges by accident at other tow company offices between the owner and officer because I dropped in unannounced. And what could I do about it? Not much because if I pissed off the officer he would make my life hell using abuse of authority.
He would harass my trucks, my drivers, my drivers families, me, my wife, my kids, my friends, my regular customers... And perpetually do everything they could to get me thrown off the tow list or outlawed to do business at all... You expose them and mass retaliation is absolutely guaranteed.
I was one of the few honest operators in a totally crooked business full of collusion. But I still had to work accidents with them all and got to know everyone of them personally and if they were honest or not.
Yes, and it was such an utterly senseless act of cruelty (shaking my head).

The hunting license fees are outlandish in NewMehico. Idont need elk that bad.
“This is how serial killers start.”
I guarantee you this guy started killing birds, cats, etc., as a teen. If he isn’t a serial killer already, he will be.
A prerequisite? BALONEY
George says we’re gonna raise rabbits, I get to feed em and pet em.
I feel the same way about Canadian geese.
I hear you.
Geese in general are nasty critters. Canada geese are also poop machines.
I don’t think that’s true, but it should be tested for, and if indicated, that person should obviously not be allowed to work in law enforcement.
