It may have been used for sacred ceremonies, as they found stone artifacts such as axes ritually buried within its walls. Or it was a recreation hall for the long winters. Axe throwing is still a popular sport.

the excerpt is not clear but this is on one of the smaller orkney islands, maybe 10? miles from brodgar and skara brae.
