Oasis has 3 or 4 songs that most people would recognize, if not know pretty well. Wonderwall, Champaign Supernova, Don’t Look Back In Anger, Supersonic.
Blur? I listened to what google says are their top songs and can’t say I recognize them. I’ve never even heard their “#1 song”. I guess they never had international success.
This reminds me of how the NYJets , for some reason, were always considered “rivals” of the Patriots… even as the Super Bowls piled up.
Blur’s music has far more soul, playing skill, wordplay, satire and variety than Oasis. The only letdown is Albarn can’t really sing, but then the Gallaghers aren’t much better.
I was at a northern English university and while the first Oasis album was a far bigger hit, by the time their third album shipped they were considered samey retreads and the musicians who’d declared Oasis the better group were playing Blur numbers because they were more of a challenge.
There were even Oasis parodies like No Way Sis’ “I’d like to teach the world to sing” (lampooning the obvious rip-off in “Shaker Maker”) and Mike Flowers Pops’ “Wonderwall” which turned it into Bacherach.
Top Man, Another Century, Bank Holiday, Far Out, Country House.
Park life, song number 2, girls and boys...
Parts of 'Song 2' by Blur shows up in all kinds of commercials, especially the "woo hoo" followed by everything kicking in. It's catchy.
