Warriors' Buddy Hield explains why Colosseum visit left him 'a little disappointed'

Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield was not entertained when he visited the Colosseum in Rome.

Hield was at an NBA Summer League game to watch the young players on the Warriors’ roster take on the Utah Jazz on Sunday night. The Warriors won the game 103-93, but it was Hield’s comments on his trip to Italy that caught the attention of the internet.

"I was a little disappointed when I went to the Colosseum because I watched ‘Gladiator’ and I thought Maximus was a real warrior," he explained on the ESPN broadcast. "So, I’m going into the Colosseum screaming, ‘Maximus!’ My tour guide said he’s not real."

"Gladiator" was released in 2000 and won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Costume Design. It earned more than $465 million at the box office.

Yes, precisely! That line in Gladiator, “Are you not entertained!” was spot on.
The thing about entertainers is that what they do requires talent but not intelligence. Actors can play really intelligent people without having a clue about that intelligence.
That said, I have handed over my money but only to watch that talent on display. In my opinion it was worth seeing.
PS - Some entertainers are very smart and they are interesting to listen to on their own merits.

He lived at a time when the people around him were risking their careers and sometimes their lives to enlist during a war. He didn’t.
Director John Ford famously harrassed him for that decision during the filming of a movie.
I’m not blaming him for that decision but IMO a great American it does not make.

My guess is that Hield was making a joke, and a lot of people fell for it.

His IQ equals how many points he last scored.

How embarrassing.

Preston played a Marine in the 1942 film Wake Island. Wonder if they thought he was in WWII also?

Joaquin Phoenix did a great acting job portraying Commodus as a villain. To put the historical Commodus in context, some of his predecessors, like Tiberius and Caligula, created whole new levels of perversion, homicide and excess.

Laugh maybe but it does point out the role and effect of story telling.

We all know why we can’t have atomic energy, name the movie.

So, by your logic every man/woman actor that did not enlist and fight on the front lines was not a great American? Some that did saw combat and performed admirably others made films while in the military, are they not great?

A great many of them that did not enlist made films, entertained troops on leave, and sold war bonds. That did a lot for morale and war finance.

Revisted the Colosseum last May. Did the “underground” tour. Worth the extra.

No by my logic, more is required to be termed “great”.
Was John Wayne patriotic? It seems so. But I would say being patriotic is good but not great.

Sad but true. I find some ignorant people on Facebook who know only TV shows and movie scripts for important historical happenings.
Often I can see by their posts they got their ideas from the movies, even the name of the movie and not actual history.

” I watched ‘Gladiator’ and I thought Maximus was a real warrior,”

Now mess up his mind by having him watch THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (1964). Some of the same characters.

**He’s gonna wish he never hears the name Maximus again.**

If the reads FR he will see it added to ‘marcus’, and quite often.

He's off to visit Wakanda next.

Well this link is about Star Trek, but it is the most realistic Star Trek story, and can be applied to all the Star Wars productions as well....
