Viva Las Vegas? Tourists shun Sin City over ‘ridiculous prices’
The Sunday Times ^ | Sunday July 06 2025 | Keiran Southern

On a sweltering morning as tourists line up for pictures with the famous welcoming sign, one topic of conversation dominates: when did Las Vegas become so expensive?

Hannah Warren, a 50-year-old assistant costume designer from Essex, was still reeling from paying $33 for coffee and a bagel at the Fontainebleau hotel.

Gary Langlois, a 65-year-old retired salesman from Minneapolis, paid $40 for two coffees and a couple of croissants. That is on top of the resort fees, parking charges and various other costs that have become a fact of life for Las Vegas tourists.

Now, after a post-pandemic boom, there are signs the Strip has pushed visitors to a tipping point. Visitor numbers have dropped every month this year when compared with 2024, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Overall, Las Vegas in 2025 is 6.5 per cent behind 2024 in the number of tourists. Airport traffic is down and gaming revenue has declined, with experts blaming a combination of President Trump’s economic policies and the high cost of a Vegas holiday.

Oh, it’s been expensive for quite some time now. You have to know where to go and what to avoid. Sorta like everywhere anymore. 🤔💰

It’s funny, I go to a timeshare there and immediately make my way to the parks and out into the desert. The fake touristy crap is kind of sad. But valley of Fire and the other parks are fascinating.

If you enjoy strange and weird people breathing all over the food you’re about to eat - yes, the buffets are ok

Las Vegas was a different world when Nevada was a red state, with Barbara Vucanovich in the House and Paul Laxalt and Chick Hecht in the Senate. Lodging was inexpensive, coupons for free poker chips were available everywhere, steak dinners and buffets could be had for a few dollars, and parking fees at casinos were unheard of.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but I was amazed to see slot machines in each departure gate at the airport.

Wasn’t McCarran the inspiration for Senator Geary in “Godfather II”?

We got married there at the city hall in 1972. I had orders to Vietnam and we wanted to get married before I went. That was the least complicated way to do it.

We had a 99 cent breakfast afterwards. It was complete, 2 eggs, hash browns bacon toast and coffee. I don't think they even knew what a croissant was there, at the time.

We've gone back many times but quit two years ago, even though it is a short drive. The place just screams fake and plastic now, overpriced and over rated.

Even back in the 1960s I didn't like the fake touristy crap and couldn't wait to get out to the Valley of Fire and the national parks of Utah, only a couple-three hours away.

“Free Parking is one item that made America Great.”

Along with FREEWAYS, although Governor Perry (here in Texas) had to get it bashed into head.

Hispanics hate that term. Only woke Democrats use that.

I can remember 99cent steak breakfast, all you can eat buffets for $10, and dinners for $15.

This is only 10 years ago.

I have heard stories of the Indian casinos being corrupt, in that, when a customer hits a large jackpot on a slot machine they will claim the machine “malfunctioned” and refuse to pay up.

It got so expensive when entertainers demanded higher compensation and when Las Vegas became like Disneyland and people no longer had to be enticed with low cost shows, buffets and hotel rooms. When people are begging you to take their money you get get away with raping their wallets, oh they’ll bitch and moan but go right back again with a smile.

It makes me furious that the Las Vegas airport, which was named after the Cold War hero Sen. Pat McCarran (D-Nev.) was renamed for our friend Harry Reid.

I flat-out refuse to call it Harry Reid. I always call it McCarran, and everyone knows what I’m talking about.
