Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he expressed the United States' frustration that more progress has not been made on ending the war in Ukraine in a meeting on Thursday with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
"It was a frank conversation. It was an important one," Rubio said his 50-minute talks with the Russian foreign minister on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Malaysia.
He said he expressed to Lavrov what U.S. President Donald Trump has said publicly, "that there's not been more flexibility on the Russian side to bring about an end to this conflict."
The envoys' second in-person meeting came amid intensified Russian attacks in Ukraine. Trump has grown increasingly - and publicly - frustrated with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the war drags on.
Rubio said he and Lavrov shared some ideas, including "a new or a different approach" from the Russian side, which he would relay to Trump upon his return.

“Kellogg’s idea of letting ‘Putin’ keep what he has and then having the rest of Ukraine join NATO in 10 years
“Very reasonable proposition. It’s what we did with West Germany.”
Starting after war with Finland, Russia created buffer areas to its west for defensive security reasons. Think Iron Curtain countries. Think of Stalin’s taking over of the Baltic states circa 1940.
If a guy was standing ten feet away from you, his having a knife in his hand might not worry you too greatly.
However, if he was a mere two feet away and holding a knife, you would worry a great deal.
If Mr. Poland and Mr. Ukraine both had knives and were close to you, Mr. Russia, you’d worry even more.
A reminder of the debates in last year’s prez campaign.
There was a lot of doubt about who was winning, given that the polls generally were all within margin of error (as was the final result).
But only one side was demanding additional debates. Same is true of a ceasefire now.
Very thoughtful post.
NATurd and the Europeeings are creating a veteran Russian army, while disarming themselves.
That’s bad. Also, soldiers are dying on both sides. Bad also.
Putin can’t take over Ukraine so you just want Ukraine to give up? You and Lavrov must get your marching orders at the same meeting...
It's not my problem that you don't understand the Russian way of war.
Operatsiya Bagration
Creating a veteran army? HAHAHA..... Not with 30,000 Russians killed or wounded every month!! If they have a veteran army why would they need North Koreans, Chineses and Laos troops?
Are you saying Russian’s way of war is to lose 30,000 troops a month. run out of tanks, need troops from other countries. lose over 400 planes and have your navy kicked out of Crimea?
I see you still watch Jake Tapper and read Will Stewart of The Daily Mail.
Shut off your TeeVee, and stop reading MI-6 talking points in the Brit tabloids.
“In other words, if those silly Ukrainians will just surrender their country to the nice invading Russians with their Kalashnikovs, everything will be just fine.”
Yep, pretty much, at this point. The Neocons running Ukraine had more options earlier, FAR MORE OPTIONS. They chose wrong.
Things may have been different with Harris, as her handlers may have been willing to start WW3, but your side wasn’t that lucky as Trump WILL NOT start WW3.
Say what you like. Everyone knows reality but you Russians...
