“I agree with folks that suggested roving guards and watches at camp sites to monitor weather and general camp safety. A buddy team already awake, alert, situationally aware, and ready to call in assistance when needed.”
Life is about balance. For everything that is beautiful and wonderful something tragic reminds us of the balance.
Government, that is so prevalent in our lives even as these tragedies continue to occur, will want to become more prevalent as a result.
It is a shame so many people prefer to be “baby sat” by others and are more than willing to give up their liberty.
I’ll point out that Comfort incident happened about 30 miles down stream as the crow flies well after the convergence of the North and South Forks of the Guadalupe River converged. I haven’t seen any reports that the camps along the South Fork were flooded at the time.
I’ll admit to confusion. How is having two people on camp staff alert to the weather and what’s going on at the camp site after hours “giving up your liberty?” If parents are entrusting their kids to camp staff during their stay, why should they expect anything less than staff ready to address situations as they arise, at whatever time of the day or night?
It’s called flash flood alley for a reason.
And this horrific loss of life is what happens when adults rely on someone else to do their thinking for them.
But the government is supposed to guarantee 100% safety for everyone doing everything anywhere 24/7/365!
I remember that very well.
For this one, The NWS gave a flash flood WARNING two hours before this event happened. The areas nearest the river should have been evacuated. They weren’t.
I haven’t found the exact times yet… I guess it was very early morning?
They’re going to have to find a way to make this happen. Or, learn to accept multi-death events every 30-40 years.
Why should they expect when there clearly were deficiencies.
Kerr County, for example, has no flash flood warning system...

So how would the people running the camps plan as a result of that?
Did the parents even know?
Seems to me like there are a lot of adults who expected someone else to ensure the safety of those children.
The Japanese had ancient stone markers in the hillside that many ignored, and built below them. How many died during the tsunami of 2011 because they forgot the lessons of the past?
Right. And the alert overnight staff should pick up the first warnings (on their phone, a radio, or a TV) go banging on cabin doors (or simply go in) saying, “We have a flash flood warning for the county and the river. We need you to move to the high ground assembly area until we get the all clear.” And keep doing that until the cabins are empty and everyone is accounted for at the assembly area.
BS.
If a train track sensor a mile away can cause a train gate /lights/sirens to activate a couple of minutes before the train arrives, they can do the same with water levels and alarm downstream. Solar/cell/wireless/ham radio over the wire/etc. can be used for FTL communications from the first warning signs to the downstream danger areas.
What about portable SIRENS that can be moved anywhere-—VERY QUICKLY ???
ON A TRAILER STORED AT LOCAL FIREHOUSES SEEMS OK.
On Twitter, they’re already saying that it’s Donald Trump’s fault because he cut the budget for the national weather service
