States will not buy into this...

The states were stupid when they supported the 17th ammendment. The states' senators were designed to protect the power of states. Why did they give up their power?

local elections are often purposely set on off year when they know almost no one will vote. That way they can easily vote themselves raises.

I beg to differ: The Big Beautiful Bill—a nickname often used by President Donald Trump to refer to legislation he champions—did not eliminate Social Security taxes due to the Byrd rule.

It doesn’t matter what the explanation is. I just don’t want people who are not very tuned in to politics to find out that they will pay taxes on their Social Security next year while they’re filing their taxes. That is too close to the election. Many of them will just stay home because they will be angry at Trump. They need to find out now so there is plenty of time before the 2026 election. As of a few days ago, Trump was still saying “no taxes on Social Security.”

>>Here in Texas, you have school superintendents in districts with multiple huge sports venues featuring jumbotron video scoreboards claiming it costs $70K per year to educate a student. They need to be fiscally starved.<<

True, and the superintendent is usually making $500k a year...

In some states, like Maryland, public school systems are countywide. Therefore taxes support many schools, not just those of one’s own town. The school system bureaucracy is enormous and expensive.

“I beg to differ: The Big Beautiful Bill—a nickname often used by President Donald Trump to refer to legislation he champions—did not eliminate Social Security taxes due to the Byrd rule.”

It is a reconciliation bill. You cannot change laws in reconciliation. The restriction is NOT part of the Byrd rule.

SS Taxes are federal code. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/86

The Byrd rule allows a senator to challenge an item.

The Byrd rule never came into play.

I would amend that to say FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS ONLY. Otherwise we’ll have foreign interests buying up more land than ever as a safe haven for their billions.

“We pay high taxes and we get high performing schools.”

That is awesome. What is the demographic profile of school(s) in your town? For me, I prefer to remove the property tax and send my children to high performing private schools.

There are far better ways to provide tax revenue than to use a value related to real estate.

Your property tax savings could be used to send kids to private schools or used to pay a different tax unattached to your property to fund public schools.

There are many ways to tax. The value of your property should not ever be one.

Simple. File an appeal on assessed value. In my county, they must grant you a hearing or discussion with an agent. My successful approach- the comps they have are based on sold houses.

Most all those houses have been fixed up, new carpeting, paint, renovations, etc. I successfully argued it would take $xxx to get mine ready for sale, got estimates and presented the panel with estimates and pictures.

The panel reassessed my property ar $45,000 less. Locked in for three years, by law. Also, spread the word, have everyone file an appeal. Everyone you know, they are then overwhelmed and may have to hire more appraisers, which they don’t want to do and will settle at a lower rate.
