President Trump told Ukrainian President Zelensky in a call on Friday that the U.S. wants to help Ukraine with air defense, due to escalating Russian attacks, a Ukrainian official and a source with knowledge of the call said.
Why it matters: Earlier this week the Pentagon paused a weapons shipment, including air defense interceptors and ammunication, to Ukraine's army.
The decision caught Ukraine and many Trump administration officials surprise.
Behind the scenes: The two sources said the call between Trump and Zelensky lasted around 40 minutes, with a major focus on Ukraine's air defense needs.
One source said Trump was aware of the recent Russia escalation, including both air strikes on Ukrainian cities and on the frontline.
"Trump said he wants to help with air defense and that he will check what was put on hold if anything," the source said.
The Ukrainian official said Trump and Zelensky agreed that teams from the U.S. and Ukraine soon will meet to discuss air defense and other weapons supplies.
The White House didn't respond to a request for comment.
What they are saying: Zelensky wrote on X that he spoke to Trump about "opportunities in air defense" and that they "agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies."
"We - in Ukraine - are grateful for all the support provided. It helps us protect lives, safeguard our freedom and independence. We have achieved a lot together with America and we support all efforts to stop the killings and restore just, lasting, and dignified peace. A noble agreement for peace is needed," Zelensky wrote.

Quit making stuff up. You have no credibility.
“Still, it’s kind of insulting to have somebody lie to your face during a campaign and get away with it.”
Trump hate finds shiny thing! Trump didn’t lie. He thought he could influence Putin. He was mistaken.
Why would I blame Putin for not fulfilling a promise that candidate Trump made? That's nonsensical.
Trump knew when he made that promise that it require the cooperation of Zelensky and Putin. Of course, he also made public statements disclaiming any further aid for Ukraine, which removed any leverage he might have had over Putin.
Now - big surprise to anyone with half a brain - Putin isn't going along with what Trump wants him to do. Shocker!
So we're left with one of two conclusions:
1) Trump knew when he made that promise that he might not be able to fulfill it, but figured voters would believe him anyway so he might as well lie, or;
2) Trump was delusional and actually believed he could force two countries at war to end it within 24 hours of him being elected.
So which is it?
There are a lot of things I like about what Trump has done, but it is him saying stupid crap like this that will make me glad when his term is over. It's insulting that he actually believes people are stupid enough to believe him.
Fixed it for you.

This article is from yesterday. Do you have a more current CREDIBLE source, Volodymyr?
“So I guess that whole “I will end that war within 24 hours” thing was just a bunch of campaign b.s..”
You’re taking Trump’s words literally instead of taking them seriously.
Trump doesn’t believe this crap. This is all for Linda Graham’s benefit, signifying nothing.

Russians start a new offensive in Kharkov Region and celebrate fireworks over Kiev.😉
I remember discussing this specific promise with a bunch of other Freepers when he made it. When I pointed out Trump had no leverage and that he was being bamboozled by Putin, I was told that I was a leftist plant, that Trump knew how to bring on pressure that we didn't even know about because it was secret, and that I should just watch it happen as he said.
It wasn't "don't take him literally", or "he doesn't mean he's actually going to bring peace - he's just saying that he'll try", etc.. No, they believed him.
The "don't take him literally" line is just the excuse after the promise is broken.
And in any case, how could you interpret that promise “seriously, but not literally?”. What’s the “serious” interpretation? Because even that seems to have failed miserably.
