EUFAULA, Okla. —One woman is deceased after being struck by lightning in Eufaula.
Joy Rogers, 57, was taking an evening stroll through a cemetery along her usual two-mile path on Friday when a storm moved through. Joy took a seat on a bench under a tree and was struck by lightning, says her uncle Joe Johnson. Rogers died instantly.
Her uncle said Joy was the life of the party and was truly a ‘joy’ to have at every gathering. According to him, his niece was a lover of nature and would take walks along the lake shoreline. On her walks through the cemetery, she would sometimes take pictures of old tombstones.

Wow!
.
RIP Young Lady.
I was taught the same. Lightning seeks the highest point, and cemeteries are often on high ground.
Thunderstorms rarely come out of nowhere.
Usually you can hear the thunder well in advance.
When you see one coming, get into shelter, and NEVER a tree.
RIP Joy.
Rip.
“She always was the life of the party!”
Yeah, we can tell:
“On her walks through the cemetery, she would sometimes take pictures of old tombstones.”
🪦 May she rest in peace
She lived in Florida where lightning is rare, so she never was taught that.
(Just kidding, folks)
Getting hit by lightning is a crap shoot.....we had 3 people hit in the same county in Florida recently and all survived.
RIP to this poor unfortunate soul.
Even on clear, cloudless days you may not be safe!
When Lightning Strikes Out of a Blue Sky

A tree? Where is the mem: He (She) chose poorly.
Technically, the path with the least electrical resistance passes the charge. That is made complex by the makeup of the soil and objects standing on the soil. It is strongly affected by any ionization already present in the air. For example, a steel flagpole anchored deeply in the ground will take a hit before an oak tree of the same height. (In the same vicinity) Next, the position of the charged air relative to possible strike points has to be considered. Distance to a strike point from the charged air is a major factor.
All babble aside, stay clear of tall things during a lightning storm.
Lightning doesn't necessarily originate in clouds. It can nail you on a cloudless day, a "bolt from the blue" really is possible. Oh, lightning most certainly will strike one place more than once.
I heard of a case of a high school student in Albuquerque who was playing in a soccer meet when he got struck by lightning from a clear blue sky.
What nobody knew what that on the backside of the mountains there was a thunderstorm nobody knew about. The lightning traveled that far ahead of the storm.
That was a mess.....
Try again, without distractions....
What nobody knew was that there was a thunderstorm on the backside of the mountains.
We all have. The poor dear.
Very saddening indeed.
May this poor lady rest in peace, and may He comfort her grieving family 😞🙏🏻✝️
Summer Monsoons are rolling thru
Arizona now and I witnessed a Good Lightning strike Yesterday!
Enough rain to mess up the dust
On My Truck!
Back in the 90s during football practice at an Indianapolis high school several players had steel cleats on their shoes.
The coaches simply wore tennis shoes that day. There was a lightning strike in the area and all these boys just hit the ground in pain in their legs. It took the coaches a minute to understand that they weren’t joking. The charge came up through those cleats. They were not seriously injured as far as I know.
That’s weird.
You just can’t be too careful with lightning.
I remember watching a storm from inside my house, by the back door.
I heard ZZZZTTTTTT!!!!!! BANG!!!!!!!! and saw lightning hit the house across the street.
I closed the door and decided that was enough storm watching exposed to the outside. I went to a window instead.
What really freaks me out, and mind you, as a meteorologist, not much does weather wise, is thundersnow.
You simply CANNOT tell what direction it’s coming from or how far away it is. As soon as the thundersnow started, I used it as an excuse to call it quits on the shoveling. :)
