Yeah, my wife and I have “run into” that latter problem several times, over the years. My most spectacular collision was in a Honda CRX 1.3, on I-24. I flipped the big buck OVER the car. Mostly. An antler came through the windshield a couple inches to the left of the (inside) rear view mirror mount. What fun.
Hmm, I might try to grow such cold tolerant lettuce in the fall, too. My attempt in the basement failed. :-(
Squirrels get ours (tulips). :-(

That’s a good vid, especially because... my vines don’t have that kind of stem damage. Instead, the stems just sort of shrivel up (as opposed to the usual “toughening” but-still-healthy appearance as they mature). The roots though sometimes generate a new stem: My one surviving Japanese cucumber is doing that, and so far the new stem, though not even 2 ft. long / tall, is flowering and attempting to fruit. The other one (Japanese cuke) appears to be dead. I have a few lemon cucumbers in pots and they are liking better this lack of rain almost every day, compared to the prior few very rainy weeks. (The lemon cukes in the ground appear to be all “shot”. They may have just drowned, as opposed to the Opo that is in a well drained pot with new potting soil this late spring.)
FWIW, whatever is happening to the Opo usually happened later in the year in previous years, to Opo, squash, or pumpkins, when soil moisture was modest.
I wish I had a solid/concise answer for ya! I think you need to build a Bio-Dome in your back yard. ;)

I have some of my stratified catnip seeds sowed in a re-used 6-pack with brand new seed starter soil. 1/8” depth.
Looking around online, I see the recommendations for best soil temperature for germination at 60-70 deg. F. Some other online sources say 70-80 deg. F. I’ll have to monitor, but, IIRC my basement will average around 70 deg. F this time of year. Hopefully, that will be about right?
My brother’s answer on the tomatoes he’s growing ... not particularly helpful.

In my case, Monday a week ago, it WAS a bull ... a very large black Angus bull running loose on a winding, barely 2 lane, country road in the dark. Fortunately, I saw him silhouetted ahead as he crossed the road & was able to slow down & avoid him.
No mention of germination temp but it does mention they can't take the heat/humidity of the deep south.
