I spent some time on Reddit, but got zotted for a comment that wouldn’t have been a problem here.
That’s beside the point. If you want to see what Free Republic SHOULDN’T be like, try Reddit.
I might add one comment:
Some have suggested an edit feature. I think that is problematic. You can get a moderator to delete your post, but editing it can cause confusion or worse.
For example, suppose someone says “I hate murder.” Someone replies to that with “Me, too!”. Then the original poster edits his post to say “I hate loving your neighbor.” Editing a post can be a double-edged sword.
I should add that as a result of my offending sarcastic post, someone emailed me attempting to draw me into some sort of movement that sounded good, but the offer glowed of fed involvement. I politely declined.
I’d love to be able to edit posts I make within a few minutes of posting. I,unlike most Freepers,am of breathtakingly limited intelligence and as a result I make many errors...some small, some huge...which I catch only after hitting “Post”.
oh geeze. ok then.
Thanks! :D
semantics. Regardless, there is an amendment process even you have issues with it or disagree with it. also, you take objection for right of women to vote?
😎
I didn’t say me. I said many here. Ann Coulter is in record as removing it as a net gain, GK Chesterton suggested it was undemocratic as it worked against women who thought it was unfeminine to vote, and on the grounds that it would be good to keep half of the nation’s hands clean of foing to war, executing people, etc.
Re:post 190.
Several (at least) of those admendments have been disastrous, namely alcohol prohibition, income tax, direct election of senators.
Part of a diminishing user base could be there are more competition for our time.
Like the former big 3 TV networks becoming just another option with the advent of a hundred satellite channels and streaming services. None have the percentage of viewers they once enjoyed.
Dilution.
“BTTT moves this thread back to the top of the Latest Posts page.”
Yes. And you don’t see that page unless you’re in the correct tab:
https://freerepublic.com/tag/*/index?tab=comments
It’s the stream of latest posts. Mesmerizing at times, refresh it frequently.
Okay, thanks. I’ve seen that before but never asked about it until now. :D
You can address them directly with your ideas.
I do not think you will be successful unless they agree _AND_you are willing to pay for the privilege.
I like what we have! Thanks Jim and John!
Thanks for the respectful reply. Yes it’s privately owned and they can do whatever they want with it. I just had a few thoughts that I think might be helpful but evidently not
FRPR cynwoody developed:

As you can see by most replies, the effort is futile. We know it’s dying but we don’t like change so let it die seems to be the attitude.
They recently took a pay cut. It was getting close to an even half a million a year but they had to reduce their goal to be able to meet a goal. Seems like a sign.
Perl - just about a dead language. Most of the web is php or python or java or some new language. Maybe the younger JR just reached the limits of his capabilities or maybe quit bothering to learn any more at a certain point.
Seems like if someone was able to make browser plugins for a wysiwyg editor, there should be a way to have one built in. Some people don’t bother with pics or links because they don’t know html or just can’t be bothered to the write code. Images and links are a bit of code and easy to screw up. Just two buttons could make all the difference. Image and Link, and for both, paste in a url.
I’ve been a member of probably 30 forums over the past 20+ years, based on all kinds of subjects, and every single one of them had a wysiwyg editor.
Other than that, the population decline of multi-generational Americans has a direct correlation to number of members here. After the 50s and 60s, people just didn’t have as many kids. My parents had 6 kids. Us 6 kids had a combined 10 kids and two of them each have a few kids but it looks like the rest never will.
As old freepers die off or become unable to use the computer, there’s not enough replacements. The Robinsons don’t seem concerned about whether the site lives on.
Front index page gets way less posts than it used to and if it wasn’t for a few odd people turbo posting their obsession subjects, there would be even less.
FR is slowly dying and tptb don’t seem to care to try and save it. Oh well.
Some improvements would be so simple. Make sure everything has a class so that it can be targeted with responsive css so that it looks good on a phone. Would make a huge difference since half the people on the web are using a phone.
As of now, there’s a whole lot of pinch and zoom to post here via a phone and typing html on a phone? Yeah right. I have no angle brackets aka greater than, lesser than brackets on my Android phone so it’s unpossible. Most systems, you paste a url and the software adds the html to make it a link.
Yep, 1 or 2 buttons and some classes and responsive css. Could be enough to increase membership by 20% but that would be younger people and the older people of Western nations seem to hate the younger people, hence the population decline.
