A Brazilian tourist who fell while hiking near the crater of an active volcano in Indonesia has been found dead, her family and rescuers said.
Juliana Marins survived the initial fall from a cliff during an early morning group hike along a steep trail on Mount Rinjani, with rescuers reporting hearing her screams for help on Saturday.
...
She was hiking up Indonesia's second-tallest volcano with five friends and a guide on Saturday at about 06:30 local time (23:30 GMT Friday), when authorities said she fell from "a cliff that surrounds the trail next to the volcano's crater".
One group member told Brazilian TV that the terrain was slippery, the climb "very hard," and visibility poor.
Drone footage and other clips filmed by hikers that have been circulating online and carried by Brazilian media also appear to show her distressed but alive and moving on Saturday. She was seen sitting and moving around in grey soil, far below a hiking path.
But rescuers could not find her when they descended 300m (984ft) to where they believed she was located, nor did she respond when they called out to her.
By Sunday morning, drone footage showed that she was no longer in the same place, said park authorities, who added that thick fog had hampered rescue efforts and affected the use of a thermal drone.
On Monday rescuers were able to locate Marins again, who appeared to have had fallen even further, but they had to stop work because of "climate conditions", according to the family.

Can you tether to a nose?
How sad that she was alive and moving around after that fall and didn’t make it.
I have friends who go on these nature hike vacations in “exotic” locations. All I can think about when I hear that is that most of the tourist deaths that I hear about are on hikes in exotic locations, usually from a fall but sometimes being mauled or eaten by a wild animal.
Sounds like the trip of a life time. Too bad it ended so poorly. May she RIP.

Gotta listen to that survival instinct when it is speaking to you.
“Gotta listen to that survival instinct when it is speaking to you.”
Yep. It’s awful when the decision isn’t clear. I’ve been there a few times. “Should I go on or turn around? Just a little bit farther and see if it gets better? Or quit now and live?”
Our resident Mountain Climber has lots of stories to tell, I’m sure.
Climuttt Chainz claims another victim.
I have seen people doing lots of stupid things. A lot of improper clothing when the weather can change quickly. A lot of people not being fit enough and stumbling around from exhaustion. Lots of people climbing above other groups of people and knocking rocks lose left and right. I was a mountaineering instructor in a course offered by one of the chapters of the Colorado Mountain Club. The course was about six months long and stressed safety and skills in the various types of climbing. One year one of the people accepted for the class went climbing alone (no rope partner) in the Boulder, CO Flatirons formation about a week before the first day of the class. He had a fatal fall.
Sometimes you cannot save people from committing acts of lethal folly.
She was climbing Mount Rinjani which is on Lombok Island. I have never climbed it, but I did climb Mt Gede on Java Island. These are not technical climbs, but lots of lose gravel and possibly snow at the top. Plenty of opportunity to fall if you are exhausted and stumbling.
She might have died by selfie, but companions and guide decided against reporting it
“died by selfie”
LOL...an apt description.

About 25 years ago spent two months in SE Asia. Flew into Jakarta. After about a week in Bali inquired about political conditions on Lombok.
Took the ferry over and spent two wonderful weeks at a quaint seaside resort with individual cabins.
So sad. I agree that perhaps it should have been called off due to the poor visibilty.
