Tuesday Morning Computer Fonts Question (Weird!)
Me | 6/24/2025 | Paul R.

Posted on 06/24/2025 8:03:38 AM PDT by Paul R.

Why does Bahnschrift SemiBold Condensed font look great (quite condensed but highly legible) in Word 2000, but does not look as "Condensed" in a Libre Office Spreadsheet?

...simple ASCII text files...

You'd really like Wordstar.

“You’d really like Wordstar.”

I had a 360k floppy that contained Wordstar, 1-2-3 and a dial-up modem program.

It seems like yesterday and millions of years at the same time. Procomm?

Wordstar worked well. I seem to remember you could write custom actions for some of those dot commands in order to work with the wide assortment of printers that existed in those days.

Here is the download link for the entire file.
If you buy a digital download they may only have a small file that then downloads then installs but does not leave a complete download as you would have on a dvd. The links below are the entire file. All you need is the Office 2024 product key. Now you can save to the pc and external hard drive and a usb flashdrive.

Office 2024 Home - size: 5,395,232kb or about 5.4GB

Yes, I ended up with Arial Narrow for the fields (cells) where I needed the most “condensation”). The smallest font size is 10.5, so, readability is still pretty good. I’ll try to run down Letter Goth 12 too, as that sound most interesting. :-)

Maximum information with good legibility in the smallest area is often my goal...

Thanks to all who have contributed here. Several posters made good points, including about the weaknesses of Libre Office: I’ve even discovered a quirk with Arial Narrow in Libre Office Calc — one of the font size changes (I don’t recall which) had no effect!

This is one of the rare FR pages that I’ve bookmarked and also saved to pdf if ever I need offline reference. :-)

Well, I’m almost 70, so, my guess is that my own use for the info. may last only 15 years or so (based mainly on how my parents held up.)

But, some of the “extra info’s” usefulness (beyond a simple inventory accounting / tracking) may outlive me, such as when I sell off what’s left of the business.

In any event, your thought is one reason I still have old (and still running) computers around. I have software that just won’t easily run on new machines.

In the case of documents, I still have Word 2000 to open old doc files. My “old” address book’s database is, actually, really just a big ASCII text file, so, I can always go retrieve stuff from it, although almost all the info. is by now outdated, and at least 1/3 of the people in it are now longer with us... :-(

Thanks, take care, and good luck in all your endeavors. :-)

Yes, thanks, but that didn’t really help. The comments about not enough attention having been paid to some fonts’ rendering in Libre Office calc appear to be on target.

Arial Narrow Bold addressed most of the problems fairly well, if not ideally.

If this may help, you can install the PrintMyFonts 24.8.31 freeware to see and print all your fonts. https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/print_my_fonts.html

Aside from that, I use the "Area" fill feature for frames and other backgrounds to create colorful signs like:
