Rhode Island’s Democratic-controlled state House on Friday approved legislation that would ban the sale and manufacturing of many semiautomatic rifles commonly referred to as assault weapons.
The proposal now heads to the desk of Democratic Gov. Dan McKee, who said in a post on the social platform X on Friday evening that he plans to sign the bill into law.
If that happens, Rhode Island will join 10 states that have some sort of prohibition on high-powered firearms that were once banned nationwide and are now largely the weapon of choice among those responsible for most of the country’s devastating mass shootings.
Gun control advocates have been pushing for an assault weapons ban in Rhode Island for more than a decade.
However, despite being a Democratic stronghold, lawmakers throughout the country’s smallest state have long quibbled over the necessity and legality of such proposals.
The bill only applies to the sale and manufacturing of assault weapons and not possession.
Only Washington state has a similar law.
Residents looking to purchase an assault weapon from nearby New Hampshire or elsewhere will also be blocked.
Federal law prohibits people from traveling to a different state to purchase a gun and returning it to a state where that particular of weapon is banned.

What’s an assault weapon?
If a Red Dawn scenario ever happened in this country these people would be the first to run and hide behind a legal gun owner.....I got one right across the street from me.
I don’t know how live in the northeast.
Rhode Islands marxist controlled state legislature, there, fixed it.
Before it’s over I believe the Demoncrats will consider any semiautomatic weapon, rifle or pistol, an assault weapon.
“What’s an assault weapon?”
Anything they say it is.....the.term is deliberately ambiguous for that very reason.
I’m sure they mean AR style....that’s today....tomorrow it could mean anything and everything....which is their end game.
I have one next door, moved to west michigan from chicago because crime, cost of living, housing costs, and they(husband and wife) declare Trump to be a criminal dictater.
That law could probably be challenged on Consitutional grounds. Once purchased, a legal gun is property and should be transportable to any state protected by the 2nd Amendment.
“...prohibition on high-powered firearms that were once banned nationwide and are now largely the weapon of choice among those responsible for most of the country’s devastating mass shootings...”
The AP writer was probably having an orgasm while writing this tripe....
AP, all you need to know.
“The bill only applies to the sale of manufacture of AW, not possession”
Welp. R.I. better get out there and buy everything you want now before Bill gets signed, says you can keep what you got now.
We can only pray God allows Iran to dirty nuke RI...That will show them..
For now the commies appear to say a firearm that can harm or kill multiple people at once. But that applies to any firearm. Also a knife, machete, car, truck, minivan, flamethrower…
And the value of those that have an AR style weapon goes up.
What’s an assault weapon?
The Left’s words for something they know nothing about could even be a Nug
Incorrect. Long-guns may be purchased over the counter by out-of-state residents in many states - depending on the laws of both states. Handguns and long-guns may be purchased and returned to most states (again, depending on the laws of both states) via FFL to FFL transaction.
Boards, knives, scissors, pens, forks, hammers, screwdrivers, cars, rope, chainsaws, etc are assault weapons. Idiots seem to gravitate toward stupid solutions to perceived problems.
Whoops. Missed a very important clause in the original statement. Yes. If it is banned then buying one out of state to have sent or bring back to the state is illegal. I’m blaming lack of caffeine.
US Department of Justice calls BS on IL Gun Laws
Illinois gun laws restrict "assault weapons" with a rather lengthy list of banned weapons by name. The US Department of Justice recently stepped in to file on behalf of Gun Owners in defense of the 2nd Amendment. Now it's getting interesting. And if they USSC strikes down IL's law, that should automatically apply to your state.
