A Battered Iran Signals It Wants to De-Escalate Hostilities With Israel and Negotiate

DUBAI—Iran has been urgently signaling that it seeks an end to hostilities and resumption of talks over its nuclear programs, sending messages to Israel and the U.S. via Arab intermediaries, Middle Eastern and European officials said.

In the midst of a ferocious Israeli air campaign, Tehran has told Arab officials they would be open to return to the negotiating table as long as the U.S. doesn’t join the attack, the officials said. They also passed messages to Israel saying it is in the interest of both sides to keep the violence contained.

But with Israeli warplanes able to fly freely over the capital and Iranian counterattacks inflicting minimal damage, Israeli leaders have little incentive to halt their assault before doing more to destroy Iran’s nuclear sites and further weaken the theocratic government’s hold on power.

Israeli strikes have killed key military leaders, including much of the top echelon of Iran’s air force, leaving Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei increasingly isolated. But the impact on nuclear facilities has been modest and analysts say it could take a long air war to get the results Israel wants.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the attacks will continue until Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missiles are destroyed, and he has shown no indication he is ready to stop. He has also said regime change isn’t a goal but could be a result given the Iranian leadership’s weakness.

The seem to think having a nuclear weapon will change their status.

Since Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, no one has directly attacked a nuclear power.

Indirect tactics have proliferated.

In the words of Max Leslie (played by Monte Markham) in Midway (1976), “Ram it Home Girls!”

They won’t come to the table if the US joins in! That is some funny stuff. If the US joins in, they will have trouble even finding an intact table.

If Netanyahu is smart he’ll accept nothing but full surrender and capitulation to whatever terms Israel wants.

Why is it presumed that Iran wants U-235 rather than Pu-239, of which 99.8% of all nuclear warheads on earth is made?

You want to go with U-235 if you want to disperse your production sites and make them hard to destroy. Pu-239 comes from a reactor which is a big, fixed target.

That is the point somewhat. The Iranian reactor site is untouched, and the Russians just completed building 2 additional on that same site, with 8 more to follow.

..Iran...their democratically elected government.
is this a parody? Sarcasm? Wit? The great majority of the Iranian people hate the current Islamic regime. They live under a theocratic dictatorship.

Election was last year with 50% turnout. Where is the evidence the people hate the head of their Shiite religious faction?

Note also the current Supreme Leader’s name is Khameini. Not Khomeini. The guy who supervised the embassy invasion and hostage taking died in 1989. This new guy is not him.

Did their policies and goals WRT the destruction of Israel change with the new guy? If not, why not?

He was enthusiastically and euphorically embraced by the Iranian people, knowing who he was and what he wanted to do (impose an Islamic theocracy). They have made their choice. They chose… unwisely.

There are many Christians in Iran who do not hold with what their government is doing and are the ones being held hostage by their government.

Muslims call themselves "Iranian." Christians call themselves "Persian."

Well, it’s the same populace whose parents and grandparents were brutalized by the US supported Shah.

As for Israel, they are 98% Shiite. They have, for 100s of years, hated Sunnis and that was before Israel ever existed.

Many dictatorships have "elections" with 99% turnout, almost all in favor the party in power. Recall the old Societ Union. They did this regularly.

If you are genuinely interested in learning about how the Iranian people feel about their current government, watch a few of the videos on Tousi TV, a channel comprised of refugee Iranians. Very well done, and in English.
