I must confess that is an angle I had not considered. You have a point.

We need immigration reform, have for decades. I get that our low birthrate coupled with entitlements* means we need to import some folks. Instead of explaining that rationally to the American people long ago and increasing the rate of legal immigration, both for permanent residency and temporary work visas (the sane and humane thing to do), our “betters” in government opted for insane open borders.

Trump had four years to plan this. Why not start out with warning farmers (and other seasonal businesses in need of immigrant labor) there would be a short grace period to register their workers and get with the program while crafting reforms that would streamline deportation of criminals, gang members and illegal immigrants living here at taxpayer expense? Ramming the relevant legislation through Congress during his “honeymoon period” would have limited judges’ abilities to quash deportations and made the whole business go smoother — and by starting off with criminals and the ones lodged in expensive hotels, even bleeding heart libs would have had trouble coming up with sob stories and fomenting riots.

I’m perplexed as to why this wasn’t done, but maybe there are things I simply don’t understand.

*Sustainable SS and Medicare require a favorable ratio of workers paying in to retirees drawing out.

You make an extremely important point here. We just can’t have our cake and eat it too. Common sense balance and compromise are absolutely in order. Scorched Earth is just not going to be advantageous at all in the long run.
