Sly Stone, the frontman of legendary band Sly and the Family Stone, has died. He was 82.
Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, had been in poor health in recent years. His publicist Carleen Donovan said Monday that Stone died surrounded by family after contending with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other ailments.
Sly and the Family Stone transformed popular music in the 1960s and ’70s and beyond with such hits as "Everyday People," "Stand!" and "Family Affair."

10-12 years ago, Tedeschi-Trucks Band would play their encore incorporating a medley of 3-4 songs from Sly and the Family Stone’s Greatest Hits. It was good stuff!

Sly and the Family Stone is one of the best band names ever, IMO.
What an awesome funk band!
They pretty much started it.
That was The Temptations.
One of the 1st albums I ever owned.....ordered from the Columbia record club.
Introduced me to R&B which led to my appreciation for Motown.
RIP sir, thank you for expanding my musical interest. 🙏
Side note: back then the Columbia record club was a racket. SMH
Prince owed his career to Sly.

Yup- the oldest son of the neighbor behind us used to play his music so everyone could hear it...this was probably 1970... I absolutely loved Sly and the Family Stone....THEY were the original great crossover act...

The Swim was a dance that was popular in 1964 but is now pretty much forgotten.
By the 1980s EVERY show was cancelled because he didn’t show up. Except for the ones where he showed up, played a song or two, took a break and never came back.
Rest In Peace, Sly.
Sad.
Wonderful music.
Met him 40 ish years ago when Mr G worked with him. He was running a scam where he was going from town to town.... would find an up and coming producer and basically bleed them of all their money while he “worked” re-recording all his old hits. Nice man, but his brain was so addled from drugs he couldn’t sing or play more than about 30 seconds of music at a time.
Mr G locked them out of the studio when he caught them free basing in the bathroom. I heard that the cost of damage to their hotel rooms was astounding. I am surprised he lasted this long.
