The Baxter State Park website notes that Katahdin is a "very strenuous climb," with an average round trip taking 8 to 12 hours.I climbed Katahdin multiple times including the well known Knife edge trail. I did this in my late 20's, this person was 58, I wouldn't do it at 58 unless I was in excellent shape.

I’m calling it a murder-suicide, as opposed to a suicide-murder.

Katahdin is the Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail, I didn’t read the article but were they finishing thru hike of the AT and after all that hiking took a chance that was dangerous and the weather or something else caught up with them

I climbed once to Pamola Peak, on a scorching July day. From the parking lot to the peak took about 3 hours. I was in my mid 40s at the time. I wasn’t carrying much, but don’t recall the climb being especially strenuous.

The weather has not been great lately. It wouldn’t surprise me if the temps were in the low thirties night time at elevation. Exposure is a real risk for the unprepared.

No mention of obvious injuries or cause of death.
If it was a suspected criminal event, Park officials would be actively warning other hikers.

Hiking has replaced guns as one of the leading causes of death in dumb America.

Maybe he died, and the daughter is hiking towards help. Hoping she turns up. Tragic.

I didn’t read the article but were they finishing thru hike of the AT Yea, not sure about that. My guess is it was a solo climb not part of the AT tail start/finish.

I remember reading a book about Donn Fendler who was lost on Mt. Katahdin when he was a little boy. Found after more than a week, IIRC. It’s supposed to be a brutal and unforgiving place.

It’s supposed to be a brutal and unforgiving place. It's not bad during the proper times, we used to climb in the Fall. It's probably up there with Angel's Landing in Zion.

Have done a ton of hiking in New Hampshire mountains - it’s amazing how many people don’t realize that a hike above the tree-line is NOT just a stroll through the woods.

What are you talking about? The elevation is well below the tree line
