Repost:

Planted too soon in my zeal: 50 or so Toms largely decimated tomato plants that went in 3 weeks previously, due to 4'' of rain in two days (5-23,24) and with strong winds, and cool temps, and into soil that already had lots of rain (more wet days this month than dry, and rainfall amounts are more than 4″ above average, with more today). After today the forecast looks like the rainy season may be over, thank God. I trimmed off many bad leaves and will see if any can recover.

I did put just a little fertilizer in a mixture of dirt in each hole before I planted seedlings, but I find it hard to believe that would be the reason for this:

But these flowers survived well, thank God in all things.

Aaaahhhh..... yellow columbine.

We have the purple species brought from Colorado decades ago. Locally Columbine is found wild and is red. We have not been successful growing the red species.

Love the columbine!

I have a dedicated columbine patch in my garden - lost the yellow one last year, I’d had it for a long time. They are marginal in my area and do not like our hot winds.

I’ve planted tomatoes early and my impression was that I gained nothing, they just sat there until the soil warmed up and things got to where the tomato plant wanted it to be in the first place.

This year I used my meat thermometer to check the soil temp and then planted, as far as wind or too much sun, or a hard rain, I cut open the big bags from the potting soil and clothes pin those to the tomato cages, either on the side to block the winds if needed, or sometimes on top to block too much sun.

I’ve been having much the same problem. For most of the last 2 months, I can hit water in under 6” of digging, and after rains, for a day or two, the soil is completely saturated (esp. in my 2nd garden area). The water table is right at or maybe a couple inches down, those days, if I don’t have standing water. My potted plants are generally doing well, those in the ground are struggling or dying.

I am a fan of columbine. I bought a yellow columbine last week. Also bought a Bluebird blue columbine and grew some McKana hybrid columbine from seeds. I need to get them in a partly shady garden so they don’t burn up.
