The owner makes money off Door Dash but we don't. And then we have to deal with the angry customers. 😠
I’ve never used door dash or other independent food delivery service. The only food I have delivered is pizza, using the people who work for the pizza shop. Nobody ever paid me extra money for having to be out in all kinds of weather during my 25 years in Corrections, when as an officer, I had to spend hours in the yard watching inmates lift weights during a snow storm or below zero temperatures, or walk all over the grounds of the prison complex in bad weather as a supervisor, to make required rounds of my assigned areas. It was part of the paycheck.
There is a reason I don’t use DoorDash and I rarley go out to eat.
This entitled BS has gotten WAY out of hand.
I hate all online this and app that. If we were to get a DoorDash gift card, we’d probably give it to someone who’d use it.
I don’t know if DoorDash comes out this far anyway. If they did, they’d expect a pretty big tip, I’m sure. No, we’re fine cooking at home. If we want takeout, we’ll pick it up when we’re in town.
Here is the likely scenario from his side of the app. He needed the money, probably a slow time in the app. So he took the order when it popped up on his screen. It was probably 5-7 miles drive to the restaurant for him and then the last few miles to the customer. It truly sucks how this works for the delivery folks. I tried it with Uber for a few weeks and sometimes people order far away from themselves or the orders come up at distances. Sucks, but that how it works.
I tried the Poplin Laundry Service and the first few offers were well over an hour away from me. Other Poplin folks viewed it as the /pay your dues newby. Dropped that side hustle real fast.
Second, this is the tipping part. If the weather is bad should a delivery person expect an added tip? Well, honestly...it is nice to get even a ‘thank you’ for coming out in such weather. I always tip well if it is a snowy night and pizza is being delivered. Truth is...they don’t have to be out there doing delivery or maybe they are poor desperate souls too trying to keep the lights on at home.
DoorDasher get anywhere from $2 to $10 base depending on the order, distance, etec. They keep all tips. They don’t get a cut of the delivery fee, that expensive fee is for DoorDash. So let’s say this guy was at $10 base for this order...Ok that’s $15 for his time and effort. But if this order was $2 that $5 tip probably made his effort a loss. Logistically he should have declined the order.
Honestly the lady’s response regarding the $5 tip raises the question how much was the total order? Should the driver have hinted he wanted more of a tip? No, that’s just rude. If he felt that way after picking up the order on his app, he should have declined it. And yes...drivers get dinged by DoorDash for declining orders. They say they don’t, but incentivize maintaining a 70% acceptance rating. I once had an order from a nearby restaurant only to find out after picking it up...it was 20 miles out my range. 40 miles round trip minimal tip. It is just the nature of service.
I tip extra when the weather is bad, HOWEVER, they know where the food will be delivered and how much the tip is BEFORE they accept the delivery.
They have no right to demand extra tips at the door. Don’t like the tips, then don’t pick up the food. Simple concept really.
IMPORTANT FACT: I use DoorDash a lot. At least 3 times a week and sometimes more.
Never used these services. If I’m alone, hungry and too lazy to go get my own food, then I always have PBJ ready to roll!
They’re pricing themselves out of a job. Call it ‘Tipping Fatigue’ or just being fed up with the insanity of it. I don’t usually order food delivered, but if the likely tip is more than the gas I’d use to go get it myself… there’s no point in delivery.
And as far as tipping the person taking an order and working the cash register… that’s a hard NO.
I hate to cook. My wife used to cook but as her health got worse, she cooked less and going out was hard. DoorDash was a blessing.
Now that she has passed, I DoorDash still. Cooking food for one is a pain sometimes and like I said, I hate to cook. Plus, for me to go out, get in the car and drive to the restaurant and back takes 45 minutes to an hour. I’ll pay the $5.00 tip and a little fee to get tit delivered.
Even if it costs me $10.00 more, my time is worth something also. I make more than it costs me in fees.
I've seen the My 600 Pound Life videos and grossly obese people who can hardly or can't, get out of bed use it
A gratuity is a gratuity. One of the issues with paying for a gratuity ahead of time is that the customer is going to be angry if there are some other extenuating circumstances where a larger tip would be nice. No one is owed a gratuity.
Not only that it is killing traditional walk-in restaurants and similar establishments.
The Lord loves a cheerful giver.
When did it start? Covid lockdowns started it going like gangbusters.
Partially. The real maker of money with Door Dash is Door Dash. I will never use them, Uber eats, Grubhub or any other type of lazy service.
Big losers - Civilization
I think I’m one of the lucky few. None of those delivery services like Door Dash, Grub Hub, or Uber Eats deliver in my area. My kids were wanting to help out with meals recently when my husband had surgery, but I told them no thanks. None of those things were available.
I did go to Costco and purchase a few heat and eat type meals so I didn’t have to cook everything, but honestly, my own cooking is far better. Luckily, he was able to help out with grilling in a few short weeks.
We drive over and pick ours up for free.
We usually keep a few things frozen for when we just don’t feel like cooking anything, Stouffer’s and such, but usually it’s easy enough to fix something simple ourselves.
Glad your husband recovered well from his surgery. My wife and I sort of take turns on surgeries so we’re not both laid up at the same time. :-)
My wife bought online. She went to checkout and at the end of the checkout process, she was asked if she wanted to add a tip. She didn’t of course.
I tip in restaurants, usually 20% for good service. If I have a pickup food order, and the food is hot and ready when I get there, I usually leave a buck or two in the tip jar. Online tipping? Give me a break.
