Surely such a momentous announcement of change would be recorded somewhere and we would know the name of the Pope and the year and other details.

#1 There may not have been an official Pope at this time.
#2Why would they be proud of going against Scripture and be held accountable later? This kind of skullduggery is best done under the cloak of darkness.

What the heck is an "unofficial Pope" and why on earth would people obey one?

#2Why would they be proud of going against Scripture and be held accountable later? This kind of skullduggery is best done under the cloak of darkness.

I'm talking about people in the Church (other bishops, theologians, scholars and others) that would have been howling in outrage if some bishop in Rome deigned to change the ten commandments. We have thousands of writings from this period of the Church from the Church Fathers who were up in arms (sometimes quite literally) if anyone dared to teach a new doctrine, but here we have not a peep of objection from anyone.
