The suicide of a 26-year-old Pennsylvania police officer over the aftereffects of the popular eye surgery LASIK was not an isolated incident, with others saying the procedure left them with agonizing and life-changing symptoms, patients and doctors told The Post.
LASIK providers say the procedure is 95% to 99% safe, but one LASIK survivor said she had suicidal ideations for two years after her “disastrous” surgery in 2000.
She also claimed to know of at least 40 people who took their own lives because they couldn’t stand constant pain and vision problems, which developed after the procedure.
“The LASIK lobby and the surgeons will tell you only 1 percent of patients have issues afterward. That’s not true. There are multiple studies that indicate otherwise.
“The percentage of those with poor outcomes are in the double digits, not 1 percent. And they know it,” she claimed.

Back in the 1990s, a guy I worked with was one of the first people in our area to have it and for about a year, he couldn’t drive at night because of the halo effect from headlights. Finally went away but at the time he was told it would be a temporary side effect lasting for a month or two, but, yes, he was not happy for quite a while.
I had LASIK over twenty years ago, when it first came out. I had severe astigmatism all my life. Bottle bottom glasses. After surgery I was 20/20–it was immediate and like a miracle. NO problems.
It could be that some LASIK locations are better than others. It seems to me that LASIK has become more like a mill in some areas. As with many things, you have to be careful of where you get the procedure done.
I. Know several who have had it with no issues.
My son in law had it a few years ago. Went through agonizing pain for 2 full days but is now doing well.
I had it. Many people I know have had it. I went to 20/05 vision. Excellent results. Wife did too. After 20 years we both regressed due to astigmatism to 20/20, 20/25. Still, excellent results. I’ve known hundreds of people who did the same. No issues 20+ years later.
LASIK does have risks due to bad doctors, but to say some people have had bad results so everyone should stay away is childishly stupid.
I hag oti doomsh dom flbgurboc and I’m difine 😆
A friend of mine bought a car once that was a lemon- I vowed never to buy a car after that 😆
I agree with you, My sister waited months to get a great surgeon and signed up with three of her friends. She had no problems or regrets.
No one’s touching my eyes.
That’s what I did. I put lens replacement off longer than practical because of white coat phobia when it comes to eyes but my doctor said the last prescription he could give me for trifocals wouldn’t last a year. Woke up the day of the first surgery in near panic.....prep took about half again as much sedation as necessary for surgery that lasted less than 12 minutes. 3 years later I still want to kick myself for delaying so long..... So far, the Toric multfocal lens replacement has been flawless. Both eyes corrected from 20/60 and 20/90 to 20/25.
I had Lasik surgery about 20 years ago-best decision I ever made. 20/20 in both eyes after before unable to read the biggest letter on the chart!
“The worst thing I got out of it was a floater. “
I never had eye surgery but I have a few floaters and they are getting more pronounced over time. Correlation does not imply causation.
I had a bad meal at a restaurant once. Never went to another restaurant again. Just too much risk to handle.
My dad got it in the 90s. Still has good vision.
Lol!
Wore contacts for years. Lasik in 2004 was a game changer for me. No issues at all.
I had a form of Lasik, called Z Lasik, 15 yrs ago and LOVE IT. My vision, since I can remember, was so terrible that during the eye exam, looking at the eye chart I couldn’t make out anything and the chart was only white. I didn’t see any letters, numbers or even that there was something on at the chart. IIRC, my vision was 20/500.
I wore glasses since age 5 and then contacts, struggling with all sorts of eye issues. My job kept me on my feet for 12+ hrs a day and my eyes were always red, dry and irritated. Having to find a 24 hr store to replace a bottle of contact solution at 2 am was THE WORST. One night in San Francisco on an overnight, I was on one of the top floors of a hotel downtown and there was a slight tremble from a teeny earthquake. I grabbed my glasses and knew if I was in a situation where I needed to see, I was screwed. I made the appointment to see my eye doctor a few days after I got back, had the surgery and LOVE my eyesight and not having to get contacts, the solutions nor having to deal with the multiple eye issues I had all my life.
