“SQUAB”

Indeed, aka Rock Dove

When you hear the term dovecoat (an Avery for table fare), Don’t think of the tiny little doves that you see in your yard occasionally or at the bird bath. we’re talking Rock Dove , which is a bigger variety, and quite taste. My favorite bird though, is the Ptarmigin, but it’s a grouse.

I wouldn't want to eat a "rock dove" from any urban area, since it has been eating trash all of its life. I suppose if you got those that lived on farms and ate grains from feed lots they would be OK. Plus eating pigeons is a bit of a turnoff since they seem less like a wild bird and more like the feathered equivalent of a city rat.

On the other hand, mourning doves are certainly good eating (for what little meat you can get from one), but they spend their lives feeding on seeds of wild or crop plants rather than on garbage.

Here in our town we used to have large flocks of pigeons about the place.

They seem to all have been chased off or disappeared..........
