The basic problem with the WNBA is, and always has been, that it is a pure subsidy project of the NBA.
The NBA was so topheavy with thugs, rapists, and bling-laden ghetto studs with longs trails of illegitimate kids with multiple women that it had become the poster child for truly misogynist behavior.
Naturally, the people running the NBA and the television networks — but I repeat myself — had no interest in actually cleaning up the game. They thought it was a branding problem.
The WNBA was organized as a women’s charity league to buy some political cover in that direction. It’s a way of buying off the activists.
But for the WNBA players, it means that their salaries have never been based on performance or ticket sales. It’s all about how much subsidy money can be extorted with their shake the money tree antics.
Caitlin Clarke is a potential game changer. Women’s basketball at the college level mostly plays to near-empty arenas, but in a handful of places, athletic departments have invested the resources in coaching and recruitment to build solid programs that have performed well enough over time to actually build school pride and a real fanbase. Iowa is one of these places, and Caitlin Clarke was selling out arenas wherever she played. She was then a huge draw in her rookie season in the NBA.
Is there enough here to project a possible financially viable future for women’s professional basketball? In theory, maybe. Fans turn out to watch women’s tennis and golf. People watch women’s gymnastics, skating, and track and field. The economics of all these sports are different, and imho, they should be left to find their own levels. But astroturfing won’t work.
There’s nothing wrong with women’s sports if people would just settle down and accept them as a class based competitions. People watch college football even though the best college teams would get blown out by the worst NFL teams. People watch lower weight classes in boxing even though none of the contestants could stay in the ring against the heavyweights. America is full of dads who have spent many years driving their daughters to softball and soccer games, often in highly competitive travel leagues; they appreciate that the women’s game is different from the men’s game and accept it for what it is.
I have thought for years that women’s professional soccer would be the first viable, self-sustaining women’s professional team sport. (Golf and tennis mainstreamed decades ago, although the women’s prize money still doesn’t approach the men’s level, but team sports and league play are a different sell.) Part of the success of the NWSL arises from the fact that two previous women’s professional leagues in the U.S. folded for financial reasons. The key people in the mix — including U.S. Soccer, which recognized that the success of the USWNT in international play depended on a strong domestic league to keep strong players in the game, create a deeper talent pool, and give athletes leaving college time to mature — stepped in and set out to try again, building from the grassroots up. Don’t overexpand. Don’t get greedy. Create a competitively balanced league with a strong product on the field. Get into appropriate sized stadiums; a big football stadium feels like a tomb with a soccer sized crowd in it, but the same crowd in an appropriately sized stadium can make the place shake. Expand prudently to get coverage in all major tv markets to build national exposure and angle for a better television contract, because nowadays tv drives professional sports in the U.S. The NWSL is getting there, and its biggest threat right now is probably from Europe, where the men’s teams are “partnering” with the women’s teams on the WNBA subsidy model. There is enough money in European men’s soccer that the big clubs can buy the women’s game for chump change, and the women won’t control their own game any more. In no time flat, all the players and owners do is sit and whine for subsidies, because “equity.” And most of the potential audience tunes them out. That’s the WNBA.
The biggest test for women’s professional soccer, and other sports? Women have to start buying tickets. Young women who grew up playing soccer are the NWSL’s natural built-in fan base. Most of those girls won’t pursue soccer after high school, and in some cases, college — and it they don’t buy tickets, the league will never be viable in the long run. That’s the big cultural change that is needed. We’re attracted first and foremost to the sports we ourselves played as kids, and if women won’t put their money where their mouth is, they can go pound sand.
They could have a candy sale, like the girl teams were required to do back before title IX.
Right, will the WNBA conduct an “investigation”?
I don’t see CC “shoving” Reese in the video. It appears Reese just fell down, not very athletic.
“Not A Angel” is desperate for social media clicks.
This racist DESPERATELY wants to monetize this incident. And she will -00% work to create similar incidents to get clicks .
This intense hatred for “Whiteness” is pathological. Behind it is a desire to eliminate anyone they have designated as “White.”
They have created an artificial “group,” and placed people in the group based solely on their inherited characteristics and not on their actions. Then they branded the group as inherently bad and made it impossible to exit from the group.
This intense hatred for “Whiteness” is pathological.
Whiteness = Western Civilization
You notice you have relatively "normal" NCAA teams like Iowa while all the WNBA teams are filled with the players who are exactly that type you've described. That was one of the main reasons why the WNBA had trouble attracting fans to their games.
UConn, UTenn, Iowa, etc are all able to draw fans to their games.
So many blacks are inveterate racists.
Sounds more and more like the WNBA just doesn’t like white players ... especially good ones
Well, it's about the only thing they have to work with.
Fix'd
They seem to be okay with Paige Bueckers.
Sorry about the phantom post. I mentioned that the WNBA only has 13 teams in major media markets. Nobody cared about the WNBA until CC showed up. She has a lot of talent, but at 150 lbs dripping wet she wont score 30 points against a talented
boy high school player. It is good fun to see her pour in some baskets on sports center.
High school level mean girls BS. Apparently some woman (many, apparently) just don’t outgrow it.
Paige is on a bad team, and has hit only one 3 in two games. She is no threat... yet.
Except in sports this is great. This is like the Detroit- Colorado NHL rivalry in the 90s. Lots of bad blood, lots of fights, lots of meeting in the playoffs, and most importantly lots of TV ratings and merch sales. Blood rivalries are great for sports, everybody gets to laugh all the way to the bank.
I’d say that’s very likely a type of gang sign signaling for Caitlynn to be shot in the head.
Immediate arrest of Reece animal no-bail. Rot in prison for life with the rest of her sort. Look, this animal taking to Tik Tok to even more paint a target on Caitlynn is inviting a murder.
Lord Jesus, please watch over Caitlynn and her family.
