Weekend do-over planned for ‘big, beautiful’ budget package (VOTE TONIGHT?)
rollcall ^ | May 18 | By Aidan Quigley and David Lerman

Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, Ralph Norman, R-S.C., Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., and Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., all had unresolved concerns about the draft bill and stood in the way of its approval on Friday morning.

A fifth GOP lawmaker and the panel’s vice chair — Lloyd K. Smucker of Pennsylvania — initially voted “yes” but later flipped his vote after the four other members voted against it. He later said he did so in order to bring up a motion to reconsider the package at a later time.

“You never know until you call the question where people stand, which is the reason I called for a vote,” Arrington told reporters after the markup. “You cannot debate things ad infinitum and achieve anything, including something this important.”

But the public rejection of President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority marked a clear setback for GOP leadership and appeared to add fuel to the internal warfare within the GOP conference over the size and shape of a package designed to deliver tax cuts, defense and border security funding, major spending cuts and more.

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., who voted to advance the bill, lashed out at the GOP dissenters after the markup.

“These are people who promised their constituents not to raise their taxes,” McClintock said. Instead, he said, they “just voted for the biggest tax increase in American history.”

Asked if the vote would embarrass party leadership, he said, “It’s an embarrassment to the individuals responsible for those votes. That’s for sure.”

Where are the Spending Cuts?
What was the purpose of DOGE finding wasteful spending
if GOP House and Senate do not plan to codify into law
the finding of DOGE?
Someone should ask Tom McClintock that question?

There are none. There was no purpose to DOGE.

It's like in Terminator 3. Judgment Day is inevitable. So is the collapse of the U.S. corruptocracy. Even 2 terms of the best president in my lifetime isn't enough to save it.

Big spending bills aren’t beautiful.

Period.

It's possible. If we continue under Vance/Rubio.

What is not being addressed here is this is just a committee.

There are 4 No votes in a committee. How many will there be in the whole caucus?

There are 220 Republicans in the Senate. 435 seats. 218 is the majority. But there are 2 vacant seats, both Democrats, both recently died with Special Elections put off to much later this year, one in Texas and one Arizona. I think that means the Dems only have 213 votes. So the breaking point will be 4 votes. If 4 votes said no of the GOP that is 216 votes, and those 4 add to the Dem total and thus 217.

There are ALREADY 4 No’s. Just in the committee. Dem Yes’s? None known so far.

Those two deaths among the Dem caucus may be all that can let this proceed, and the real budget comes up in Sept with one of those seat filled by then (the other late Nov).

“public rejection of President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority”

Huh? Has anybody heard of that?

There was HUGE public rejection of Biden’s execrable and deceitfully named big government “Inflation Reduction Act,” but it didn’t matter one bit. Congress gave him what he wanted (or whoever controlled the puppet).
