This BBC film examines the myth behind the sixties, which was itself created before the decade was even out but has since lingered in all of our minds. What we have lived with however is merely a mirage and this documentary sets about exposing the truth, suggesting that we are living on borrowed time as a result of those who indulged whilst an unchecked Britain experienced an industrial decline. Looking back on old archived footage and the political atmosphere of the time a case is built against the decade we all consider to be filled with dreams

I just downloaded The Devil’s Chessboard . I'll definitely read it. Thanks for the tip. I've always wondered about all those evil people. Allen Dulles's name keeps popping up. Some of that missing Nazi gold ended up in Allen Dulles's hands (as well as the hands of G.H.W. Bush).
I'll let you know when I've finished it. It will be a couple of weeks, since I'm already stacked up in the middle of several books.
I am a bit wary about a BBC documentary on the 1960s. Period documentaries often exaggerate what happened and especially exaggerate the role and importance of politics.
As one who grew up in the 1960s I sort of know how it was. Lots of societal changes but most people just went about their lives.
Warning.
This is a 6 part video series , each part about 9-10 minutes long.
It sees the 60’s from the British perspective, which IIRC, was much tamer than it was here.
There is little to like about the late 60’s and most of 70’s. They were not good times
The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965
I’ll leave you with this, for now: Oswald was a patsy.
I think you will find it worthwhile.
The 60’s was the decade of the final collapse of all the european empires. Five hundred years of colonial empires came to an end.
That set of a civilizational freak out that continues to this day.
Though Trump is turning it around
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Overall I wished it had never happened. Especially being very impressionable during the Kennedy assassination. And then the floodgates opened wide and we’ll never go back to pre-sixty times.
Best years of my young life was the first 10 years I was born.(1946) I would not trade them for anything but I would not want to live them again.
Worst years was age 10-23. 1956-1970.
Then at the age of 24, things got much better when I met my wife. Still love her!
We had neighbors that would come outside if there was a ruckus in the street. 5 cent coke bottles, being broke as a kid.
Schools were 3 r's, teachers were respected. You could read if you graduated. Segregation was abolished. Made things worse for white kids who didn't fight every day.
And j Edgar hoover ran the fbi like the kgb and blackmailed politicians and Hollywood.
Born 1956, still remember LBJ saying something about ‘he would not send American boys 8 or 10 thousand miles away to fight a war that Asian boys should be fighting for themselves.’ And on the CBS Evening News with Walter Conkrite on Fridays he would tell me what the body count was on both sides.
I survived the 60s, twice.....
Best music in the 60s. Cool fashions.
“... and the US was great....”
Indeed. I remember the 60s as a great time for me.
The 1960s were a great time to be living in Southern California. At the time, it was the fastest-growing economy in the world. In the latter part of the decade, we had a conservative Republican governor and a Republican legislature, and during the entire decade, we had at least one Republican US Senator, and for a while, two, although one was a RINO.
San Francisco had a Republican mayor in the early part of the decade, and LA was governed for most of the decade by a Democrat mayor who was to the right of most Republicans. We also had some solidly conservative Representatives including Glen Lipscomb and James Utt. Max Rafferty, our schools chief from 1963 onward, was a no-nonsense traditionalist, and under his rule, our public schools were the nation’s finest.
Sadly, in college football, Occidental College only went 2-8 against the mighty Whittier College Poets. However, the 1960s also saw the USC Trojans win two National Championships, play in four Rose Bowl games, winning two, knock Notre Dame out of a National Championship in 1964, and go 7-3 against UCLA. The LA Dodgers also did well, winning three pennants and two World Series. And Whittier High School won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) football championship in 1964.
So the sixties weren’t so bad.
1960-1969 Grades 4-12.
All good, very blessed.
A very good rural public school.
Played HS baseball and basketball.
Got an academic scholarship through my college boards.
Maybe not the best years of my life but certainly among the best.
Ended the decade on December 1, 1969 by getting a winning number in the draft lottery.
“Best music in the 60s. Cool fashions.”
As an older Yute then, there seemed to be a ton of personal freedom.
I could go where I wanted to go and do what I wanted to do....
The antithesis of the fifties.
As a kid in the 60s I played outside, my mom had no idea where, until the street lights came on. So did every kid I knew.
LBJ, hippies, Weather Underground, counter culture, urban race riots.
Hey, I’m not bad. 🤣👍
