One threw the world series and took a dive. Pete Rose bet FOR his own team to win. He would have LOST money by throwing the game. His bet would make him fight harder.
Not the same.
Doesn’t matter. Bob Feller used to say that baseball had a lot of rules but only a handful are posted in every ballclub and gambling is one of them.
He SAID he bet for his team. After he said he didn’t bet on games he was involved in. After he said he didn’t bet on baseball. After he said he didn’t bet. When a guy admits to three lies, don’t believe the 4th thing he said.
This is incorrect and regardless, relies on Pete Rose being honest in what he said: Something he never did in his entire life. He lied continuously until the evidence forced him to concede prior lies.
Regardless, though - a baseball season is a sprint. It saddens me greatly, growing up as a fan of the *player* - but I’m also a member of SABR and I’ve seen convincing studies that correlate things like “days off” or rest days for players. Bullpen usage patterns. Strong indications that Rose essentially “played off” games he did NOT bet on to increase his chances in games he DID bet on. There are some other indications he tried to “move the line” - change tendencies, change the rotation, etc to juice his bet days.
It is impossible to prove any of this - the only man who could do so is dead and had a lifelong aversion to the truth.
Joe never took any money and never threw a game.
Pete DID everything they accused him of. And he admitted it.
“One threw the world series”
Sure, while putting up series MVP numbers.
> Pete Rose bet FOR his own team to win. <
True. But his bets might have motivated him to make decisions that he otherwise would not have made.
Do I rest my best pitcher for one more day? That would be good for the team. Or do I use him today, in a game I have big money on?
I think it all boils down to what the Hall of Fame is meant to be. If it’s meant to simply recognize great accomplishments, then as a player Rose is in.
But if it’s also meant to inspire, then Rose is out.
A good argument could be made either way.
If they want to look at sports betting, closely examine all who are connected with fantasy betting like Fan Duel. There’s too much money involved for some sort of rigging not to be going on.
Personally, I think it’s ruined the NFL’s credibility.
ANY betting, for or against your own team corrupts the game. ANYTHING, ANY MOTIVE... besides wanting to win the game purely because it’s your profession and duty to yourself and your team, is corrupt!
Stupid ass.
Pete Rose bet on his own team when he was the manager of that team. That has a direct impact on how he chooses to manage that game, especially in terms of the pitching staff.
Read the Dowd Report. It’s pretty damning to Rose’s case.
