This is a frightening slippery slope. The hammer that the safety cult will use to โ€œmake it soโ€ will be the claim that self driving cars are not able to share the road with human driven cars - ergo, human driven cars must be severely restricted or banned. No thanks.

Autodriving cars equal police (or gov) being able to shut a car down for any reason eventually, having ability to hack into the computers.

Not a good citizen in their eyes? Car won’t run. Gun owner? Car won’t run. Outspoken Conservative, car will run for awhile but leave them stranded way out in middle of nowhere.

But rememeber, they are doing this “for our safety “ /s

A few years ago, I got a new company car. A few weeks later someone hit the brakes hard ahead of me. As I was initiating my own panic stop, suddenly a loud alarm went off in the truck scaring me. I almost let off the brake.

That’s when I realized that the truck had an early warning detection system.

1. it scared the crud out of me.
2. I was already engaged in evasive action before the stupid alarm to told me to.

As soon as I could, about a minute later I pulled over and read the manual to turn off the stupid warning system.

I was thinking a phase in on Interstate Highways. I would love to be able to fill my vehicle with gasoline at 9 PM and let it drive me 500 miles while I doze when I’m doing some long distance trip.

Most 4 or more lane driving is not that complex during off-peak traffic periods. Combined with current navigation technology this would be very worthwhile.

Yup—that will be the biggest benefit of self-driving cars—maintaining independence for the elderly who otherwise should not be on the road.

One of my grandmothers had three different accidents (in her late 80s and early 90s) where she hit pedestrians—fortunately no fatalities—before her license was yanked.

A self driving vehicle should do better than that.

Lol.

I’m not going to predict anything specific into the future.

I scoffed at the idea that every phone would have a high quality camera. I was wrong. For that matter, just the fact that everyone carries a phone is surprising if you witnessed
your first car phone bill for an hour of talking. I can recall talk of charging for each email back in the Prodigy days.

I was surprised at the popularity of texting, I thought email on your phone would be sufficient. I was way wrong.

When it comes to technology I think it’s safe to say almost anything will be possible.

Headlines will be

“Another vehicle has mysteriously erupted into flames. Police suspect a lone wolf operative. A thorough investigation has been ordered by President liberal. Police do report however that the driver was a suspected right wing extremist, and someone who read his Bible religiously. Motive for the attack unknown at this point.”

[[Will the manufacturers be sued, sent to prison, for accidents caused by their products]]

Good question! As it stands now, manufacturers can’t be sued in many cases. IF they manage to be allowed to sue autdrive manufacturers, then it’s a short hop skip and jump to suing gun manufacturers if thei4 gun is used in crimes

All self driving caca is controlled by humans writing code. Think of all the times in all the years when you had to deal with a bit of software that was buggy.

There is no liability on poorly written code ‘cause those that write it are not professionals — like doctors and engineers. So, they don’t care. Take a look at any software license — like with the Vax: no liability.

Self driving is a pipe dream, like the green new deal, global warming, etc.

so you can be stopped by gangs of thugs who then destroy the car like in LA or San Francisco. No thank you.

Sit in comfort as the car locks you in and drives you to the interment camp due to a low social media score.

The problem is that making the vehicle "safer" introduces a complacency risk that has done nothing but incentivize a major decline in driving skills.

I am not a pilot, but from what I've read they have the same issues. Automation works until it doesn't. Often when automation fails, the pilot is way behind the aircraft and can't recover. Some of the best decisions are to stay at home or pull out the credit card when conditions warrant.

It’s coming and one day driving your own car will be considered “quaint” and few people will be able to drive themselves at all. How many current drivers can drive a stick shift (in the USA)?

Self driving cars and trucks are here because AI is advanced enough to make it work. Just a decade ago this would have seemed crazy. The AI we have today is relatively safe and beneficial. It will do a lot of good things, but the next level (AGI) will be smarter than any human being and almost impossible to control.

Once we thought this level of AI was far in the future, but unfortunately it turned out to be a lot easier to create than we thought. Many Silicon Valley billionaires (including Elon) want to push ahead to god like super intelligent AI.

Anyone who thinks they can't do this is essentially betting that their own knowledge and ability is greater than these people. It is a mistake to bet against Elon and rest. They are smarter than we are and they undertand cutting edge AI tech much better than we. Maybe not what you want to hear, but we all need to face this. These people know that it is possible to use AGI level AI to quickly create super intelligent AI, and they are busy putting their money behind this technology.

Because they are smarter than we are does not make them morally right. Many of them do not care if the human race survives. Elon Musk recently said that it seems to him that biological intelligence (us) may only turn out to be a "boot-loader" for digital intelligence. This is a profoundly wicked and repugnant statement that he should never be forgiven for. Musk did not always feel this way about humanity, but he has been corrupted by the very real possibility of unlimited power. The true reason for Neuralink is to be able to merge his mind with Grok 5 or 6 and become a god-like transhuman. No doubt this sounds crazy to you, but remember, don't bet against Elon Musk. We will lose if we try to play this game. The only way to win is to create a new game with new rules. We need to freeze AI at the level it is or humanity will face the prospect of losing everything and being remembered as merely the boot-loader for the new transhuman/posthuman entities of the future.

Yeah, crazy stuff, but it gets stranger and more crazy than this in the next 18 months if we don't stop these people.

As though there are support groups meeting in community centers around the country, commiserating over their lives because they can't drive a stick.

People learned it just fine before the automatic transmission rolled out, and they were better drivers for it.

A lot of people around here drive Subarus. Subarus have whats called a “lane holding feature” as do many other brands. Vermont is notorious for not painting lane markings on roads, snowplows scrape any lane markers off, and embedded ice covers the lane markers. Subarus go nuts in these conditions. You can disable the “lane holding” after scrolling through the “touch screen” and finding the appropriate “PID’ to touch, then when you turn the car off and restart the lane holding comes back on. Lots of fun these new cars.

Iโ€™ll continue to enjoy rowing through the gears on my gated transmissions, thank you.

So do I , but it sure would be nice to have on a drive from Phoenix to Dallas.
