WASHINGTON – As many Americans across the nation are rushing to obtain their REAL ID license, some are choosing to opt out by either using their valid passport as their preferred form of ID for travel or waiting until their current driver’s license expires and then renewing it.
The REAL ID requirement takes effect on May 7, when Americans must have a new form of identification in order to fly domestically.
The costs of obtaining the identification vary from state to state. Costs also vary according to whether travelers are obtaining a first-time REAL ID or looking to renew their existing license.
Other forms of identification that will be accepted in lieu of a REAL ID include a valid U.S. passport or passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards, and border crossing cards.
With the deadline looming, Fox News Digital spoke this week with travelers and asked those who do not have or do not plan to get a REAL ID any time soon why they made that decision.
At the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C., Lisa from Oregon said that it was a “financial decision” at this time.
Lisa (no last name shared) said she had not yet gotten a REAL ID to date “because it was an extra cost, and I knew that I would rather put that money toward the passport.”
She said that at a later date, she may decide to get a REAL ID.
“When I’m traveling later, I’ll have to bring my passport, and I may not want to do that for stateside travel,” she said.

If this single issues prevents your wife from voting, that is just sad and not well thought out.
RealID reminds me of Covid...being forced to do something while others are exempted, ie illegals...I do not plan to comply.
But if you haven't seen your SS card nor your BC in decades and have no idea where either is, you might have a different opinion.
My wife got her real ID driver license when I did. Wasn’t hard and I don’t remember providing a marriage license. Just turned in our old DL from the previous state.
I would think most charters would fall under that category although there can be some wiggle room. A private aircraft would likely fall under FAR 91 and RealID requirements wouldn't be required unless it leased while not be used by the owners..
Confirmation was 13 years after my birth. Back then, you didn’t get a social security number until you were 16 or so (to get working papers).
> Starting to wonder if this is malicious compliance issue.<
Oh, absolutely!!!
Married women who change their name are not the typical deMS-13 voter.
Funny story….
When my wife and I applied for temporary residency in Honduras (what a long, expensive process) I was deemed the applicant and my wife was deemed the dependent. We were asked to provide our original marriage certificate. We were smart enough to have requested 3 originals when we got married in Florida.
We submitted an original and that was denied since it was “too old”. They wanted a certified copy of the original. The copy was to be no longer than six months old. Florida was a dream to work with for this.
Eleven months later and 2000 bucks poorer we had our one year residency, renewable every year for $20.
When I see how easy the illegals have it entering the US it steams me.

I moved into the country two years after getting my first Real ID. Where I currently live has no postal address and they do not accept a PO Box for the Real ID. So no renewal.
By posting this, you are thwarting the fearmongering FReepers who say you never can fly again (if you’re crazy enough to want to) without the Real IS.
A Passport will do; that’s what we have used. (Haven’t flown since 2020, though.)
Real ID, not IS. :-(
With the DEI air industry, I don’t want to fly anyway.
My husband had his card issued in the early 60’s and it was laminated. It was useless so he had to wait for hours at the SS office for a new one.
A while back I went online out here in CaCaLand to renew my license — and get REalID in the process. Midway thru the web site it kinda said, OK, and simply mailed me a new license. Not RealID. No update to my piccie. Nada.
Gov’mt websites are caca, written by clown coders, administered by idiots.
Real ID has been coming for two decades…. no excuses. About time US citizens get real IDs as states like the peoples Republic of Minnesota are handing out driver’s licenses to illegals no questions asked.
My wife cannot get a real ID because we cannot get all of the paperwork showing her several name changes. We tried for several months only to get the run-around from the moron clerks at the court offices.
So we renewed her passport. F CALIFORNIA IDIOTS AND MORONS!
No. It's about time to charge and sentence those in Minnesota who are giving out fake IDs, not the time to try to force Americans to turn over records and surrender rights to a korporation that has a contract with the government.
What most people don’t realize is when they go through the TSA check, they are not required to have their photo taken. You can politely opt out of having them take your photo and not lose your space in line. The TSA agent, at the most, may give you attitude, but they are required to respect your wishes and not force you to take a photo.
I resent getting a “real ID” e quad they gave IDs to criminals. My first thought upon hearing what was necessary to get a real ID was “Hell with that, I’ll get a passport”.
