Yeah Johnny Carson was interviewed and asked why his show did not deal with more politics. Carson mentioned Bob Hope and other comedians of that era generally not focusing on politics. He made a strong case for intentionally not making his show overtly political.

Carson had his faults but I was grateful for his show back then. God bless him.
