I suspect what happened here is that Neocons/Democrats were so scared of Trump that they had to use DeSantis to try to draw some blood from Trump during the 2024 Primaries, when they likely preferred to use DeSantis in 2028.

So they consumed their best weapon for 2028 in 2024. That’s how important stopping Trump was to them.
