I worked for years at 14,000 ft and never got sick.
(I was in my 30’s and 40’s)This included lot of physical exertion.
Some people just don’t belong at altitude.

Please purchase insurance before leaving home and be sure it covers emergency search and rescue in mountainous areas in case something goes wrong. Rescue operations in Japan's mountains may be conducted by the police, rescue workers from private companies, or a combination of these. If a private company conducts the rescue operation, you will be charged about 50,000 yen ($348.16) per day per worker.

When you travel to La Paz, Bolivia by plane, there's no gradual, you're at altitude walking out of the plane. The airport is at about 13,000', the city 12,000'. Takes about 4 hours for the beer buzz to wear off. I worked there in my late 40's, never needed the roving O₂ van. Don't know about now but I wouldn't want to deal with it.

That is true, I believe. Some people do not belong at altitude. Altitude sickness is highly variable and from what I know of it, difficult to predict.
