Slate: Introducing the Bezos-backed EV pickup for the masses
Yahoo Finance ^ | April 25th, 2025 | Pras Subramanian Senior Reporter

“We built it, you make it.”

That’s the motto for Slate, a new American electric vehicle company, which just revealed its launch model and is backed by ex-Amazon (AMZN) executives, including, reportedly, Jeff Bezos’s family office

Slate said its EV pickup, a bare-bones truck with a footprint smaller than a Ford (F) Maverick, will cost somewhere in the mid-$20K range, and it will come in any color you want — as long as it’s slate gray, that is. The option-challenged vehicle offers a choice of two battery sizes for the rear-wheel-drive truck: a 52.7-kWh battery pack targeting 150 miles of range and an 84.3-kWh pack with 240 miles of range.

I have been saying that custom built EVs could be a future thing - once one of the monthly "battery breakthroughs" proves to be viable replacement for LiO .batteries.

Meaning that like as you easily choose a motherboard and then find compatible components CPU. RAM, SSD's, etc.) to build your own PC, then you would build an EV by choosing a frame and other compatible components which a local shop dedicated to such would put together.

EV's have much potential once the Lio battery issue is solved (too heavy, expensive, and environmentally costly) plus the costly repairs. Get rid of your ICE car's exhaust system, engine cooling and lubrication and replace with electric motors in a vehicle that go 400 miles on a charge, and with nuke plants providing generation.

There’s more to life than fuel economy.

That said, my fuel bill is nowhere near $4K/year.

However, you go right ahead and ASS-U-me anything about me that makes you feel secure.

I’d go with a hybrid as well.

My wife’s hybrid Camry has done amazingly well since it was bought new in 2011.

“There’s more to life than fuel economy.”

Add in maintenance and capital costs and you are talking about $8k a year about $500k a lifetime.

I learned to drive in a LUV.

It was fun even as a 2WD.

There is a guy in my hometown who drove the same beat up white LUV since he bought it in the late 70s or early 80s until maybe a couple of years ago.

He had gone through a few engines I think.

I’d love to see the LUV come back. A basic bare bones 2 or 4WD truck that the average guy could tweak and customize at least some without needing an electronics degree.

It “embraces DIY culture.”

Yes, those weekend oil changes and tune-ups with your teenage son will create memories that will last a lifetime. And adding custom headers, a radical cam, and glass packs will really make your son’s eyes get big when he hears that V8 roar to life.

LOL! Those memories last. So glad they are only memories and no longer reality.

Here is a LUV I saw at long ago Dragstrip.

https://youtu.be/flfCD1TkuP8?si=tYHLVe9PoCcSksgE&t=84

The dragstrip is still going but it’s about a two hour drive to nowhere for me.

I don’t care much for sports but drag racing I will tolerate for a little while.

I don't think the technical details of the battery capacity/range are correct. The standard Nissan Leaf has a 40KWH battery with a range of 150 miles. The longer range model has a 60KWH battery with a range of about 240 miles under ideal conditions..

The difference is probably the vehicle weight.

Your post was nonsense then. Musk is NUMERO UNO in EV production.

“A Pickup for every Peasant”

Why do you demean the deplorables in flyover country?

I respectfully disagree. The pickup shape might cause it to lose range contrasted with a Nissan Leaf.

For example our BEV Hyundai Ioniq 5 has virtually the same EV tech as the Kia EV6. But the EV6 gets better miles/kWh than the Ioniq simply because the Kia is a small sedan shape, while the Ioniq is a crossover/mini SUV shape.

Add to that the possibility that the pickup might have a more powerful motor to carry a load, even if small relative to other pickups, and it might not be expected to have the same range or miles/kWh as a car. Much like a gas pickup doesn't get the same mph as a car.
