NY AG’s office hires Hunter Biden’s lawyer to defend Letitia James against mortgage fraud accusations
NY Post ^ | 4/24/25 | Victor Nava

New York Attorney General Letitia James has tapped criminal defense attorney Abbe Lowell — who previously defended Hunter Biden against federal tax and gun charges — as she fights mortgage fraud allegations.

Lowell, a partner at the Winston & Strawn LLP law firm, was hired by the Office of the New York State Attorney General and not retained personally by James, according to the Times Union.

The decision to hire Lowell, a prominent white-collar defense lawyer, was based in part on the AG’s office belief that the bombshell criminal referral filed by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte earlier this month was directly correlated to the civil fraud lawsuit James’ office brought against President Trump last year, the outlet reported.

James is accused of falsifying records to get home loans for a property in Virginia that she claimed was her “principal residence” in 2023 — while still serving as a New York state prosecutor, according to Pulte’s referral to the Justice Department.

Pulte also alleged that in February 2001, James purchased a five-family dwelling in Brooklyn but has “consistently misrepresented the same property as only having four units in both building permit applications and numerous mortgage documents and applications.”

Lowell is representing James as a private citizen, not as a member of Winston & Strawn LLP, according to Fox News.

On Thursday, Lowell attempted to poke holes in the allegations in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi. He also argued that the accusations are nothing but “retribution” from Trump against James in the letter.

It’s unclear if New York taxpayers will be footing the bill for Lowell’s legal services.

The DC-based lawyer reportedly “charges a rate of $855 per billable hour,” a figure that was cited by an attorney for Lunden Roberts – Hunter’s baby mama...

Hey, Hunter got away with it as Brandon took chicom bribes. Letitia will probably need a pardon.

$855 an hour...$8.55 is probably more reasonable based on what they did for Hunter. All that work and he got a pardon.

Why does the NY Attorney’s office have to pay her legal fees?

If I get into legal trouble, will my state hire a Public Defender for me of similar quality? Or am I not special enough?

Actually, that rate is low for a guy with his experience and profile. Must be a special discount.

Hiring Lowell personally—not through Winston & Strawn—says that she and Lowell recognize that the case is serious, politically explosive, and legally dangerous.

The “clerical error” excuse and attacks on the referral as “cherry-picked” show they’re already in damage control.

This isn’t just about protecting her job. It’s about protecting her from prison—and that’s exactly how she’s behaving.

Good to know.
I would think she has a higher standard of compliance with law being an atty., an AG and having prosecuted a former President for a similar charge and repeatedly told the public how serious it was.

She has what we might call a Fani Willis complex. People who achieve high positions because of anything other than merit come to believe they're entitled—like princes and princesses.

That's why they cut corners. And the more corners they cut, the bigger those corners get.

Democrats are a pathetic joke. James ran on takingTrump to court. Now she is on her way to court and it is unfair that people look to get Her? It seems obvious her loan paper work were not totally on the up and up. Is her dad really her husband?

Why is NY AG office definding a private citizen accused of a private crime?

Sounds like theft.

Tish doesn’t have a problem with a White guy when she’s looking for the best defense lawyer. Otherwise, she views White men as the scum of the earth.
