A few generations in a place change a people. Try telling an Australian, a Canadian, or a Kiwi that they're actually still British. By the mid 18th century and two hundred years of de facto self governance Americans had become a distinct people.

On the other hand, my one ancestor who I know for certain fought in the Revolution (on the American side) was a German. Just like King George.
