Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) met with Gov. Brian Kemp last Monday as the GOP lobbies the Georgia Republican to run for Senate in 2026.
Why it matters: Georgia is a top pickup opportunity for Senate Republicans, and the popular Kemp is seen as the party's strongest potential candidate.
Thune was joined at Monday's lunch in Atlanta by NRSC Chair Tim Scott (R-S.C.), according to two people familiar with the meeting.
Kemp's wife, Marty, also attended.
The intrigue: Kemp has a complicated relationship with President Trump, who attacked the governor for not overturning his 2020 election defeat in Georgia.

Kemp will run. Many MAGA supporters, including myself, have stated if Trump won Georgia’s primary, they would vote for Kemp if he wins his primary.
Barring any unforseen circumstances, Kemp easily wins if he throws his hat in the ring.
The state of Georgia has decided that it can support Trump and Kemp at the same time. The state has supported Kemp by a larger margin, I think.
We can all be mad at Kemp, but he’s probably going to be the next senator.
Those involved in the 2020 Big Steal should be shunned from the party. Kemp not only aided stealing GA from Trump, but also was complicit in installing two Rats in the Senate to represent GA. MAGA needs to just say “no” to this snakes.
And that philosophy gave us the feckless cowards we have now.
What is a better strategy? I’ll support and push for a better one than current.
