When my brother was in college and active in local Republican politics his best friend in that milieu was a black guy (name escapes me). Same thing happened with me when I had my one and only job in government. I still, thirty years later, keep in touch with Oney.

Republicans didn't abandon blacks in the sixties to pursue the "Southern Strategy". If anything, that pursuit helped bring the younger generation of southern whites away from the Democrats and Jim Crow. Democrats are still the ones who classify and strive to separate Americans by race.
