Common antiparasitic drug shows promise in halting growth of aggressive skin cancer (Merkel cell carcinoma & Pyrvinium pamoate)

A common pinworm medication may stop and reverse cancer growth in Merkel cell carcinoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, according to research.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare but fast-growing neuroendocrine cancer that is three to five times more likely than melanoma to be deadly. Response rates to current therapies are limited, resulting in a need for effective and broadly applicable therapeutics.

Pyrvinium pamoate, a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1955 to treat pinworms, has been shown to have antitumor potential in several different cancers, including breast, colorectal, pancreatic and bladder cancers. This is the first time it has been studied in models of Merkel cell carcinoma.

Padi and the research team found that in laboratory models of Merkel cell carcinoma, pyrvinium pamoate inhibited cancer cell growth and reversed the cancer's neuroendocrine features. In mouse models of Merkel cell carcinoma, pyrvinium pamoate reduced tumor growth.

"This is a hypothesis, but some people think the reason an antiparasitic agent could be effective against cancers is because tumors are a little bit like parasites in our body," Padi said.

"Parasites and tumors must develop ways to use scarce resources in their host to feed themselves and allow for unlimited multiplication. If the pathways that they have hijacked to feed themselves are the same, then you get lucky, and you have a tumor type that could be amenable to killing by these antiparasitic drugs."

Padi and the research team chose to test pyrvinium pamoate after identifying the Wnt signaling pathway as one of the molecular mechanisms that drives the transition of normal cells into Merkel cell carcinoma. Pyrvinium pamoate is a known Wnt pathway inhibitor.

Further research is needed to optimize treatment protocols for the development of pyrvinium pamoate as a clinically useful medication for Merkel cell carcinoma.

Pyrvinium pamoate is legal in the US, but hard to find, due to newer agents being better for pinworm.

Something similar to Ivermectin?

I thought those drugs would kill you upon contact and millions were poisoned yearly due to overdoses? /s

Merkel Cell Carcinoma is what killed Jimmy Buffett.

Merkel cell killed my ex-husband, my daughter’s dad. Nasty stuff —he was gone within a year of diagnosis and was in constant pain and he grew lots of tumors under his skin that didn’t give him a moment’s rest.

Wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

I take ivermectin as prophylactic 2x/week for breast cancer. Have had it once, and am trying to avoid a return.

I’d never heard of Merkel Cell before Jimmy Buffett’s death, and the articles mostly mentioned how aggressive it is.

Merkel cells are found close to nerve endings which must be why it’s so painful. Sorry about your ex. Probably a relief when you finally pass.

Fenbendazole is also a well known anti cancer drug. Not only against Merkel cells but very versatile for all types of cancers and ... a dewormer too.
The physiological action mechanisms of Fenbendazole (a whole family in fact, including Menbendazole) against cancer are known even better than for Ivermectin.

I take it once every month as preventative. Never had cancer but don’t wish to get one. I would take Ivermectin too had it not been banned for sale (except if you can prove to be a horse) in Europe what the reasons we all know.

“Fenbendazole is also a well known anti cancer drug.”

Is that OTC?

“I would take Ivermectin too had it not been banned for sale (except if you can prove to be a horse)”

You live overseas? (Doesn’t say on your Profile Page.) It’s legal here in TN, and we get it from our compounding pharmacist. I think it just became “legal” in another southern state, but don’t recall which one.

I might try the horse paste, though, as the pills are pricey.

Yes, I’m in France and I buy it from online pets pharmacies. Mine is Panacur 500mg for dog deworming (with picture of two dogs on the wrapping, lol).

Ivermectin can’t be bought anymore anywhere in Europe if not for horses by veterinarians. At peak covid, I bought it from the UK with the pills produced in India, it cost a fortune. Now if I can get ‘horsepaste’ from the US from a trusted person, I’ll take it at a heartbeat.

I had to give Panacur to one of our cats a few years ago.

Pyrvinium pamoate & HCQ & Ivermectin & Mebendazole and fenbendazole will stop many cancers. The pharma industry will put a stop to this.
