I've been supportive of Trump's tariffs despite all these gloom and doom sob stories. However, this one has a slightly different twist:

"You can't produce coffee in the United States. There's no replacement."

So should we put have tariffs on products that can't be produced in the USA? I am thinking no, unless the supplier's country has predatory tariffs on us.

As we say here on FR, never accept the enemy's premise: "Coffee is commercially grown in two states in the US: Hawaii and California. Puerto Rico, which is a US territory, also has a thriving coffee industry. Experimental coffee growing projects are also occurring in Georgia and Santa Barbara, California." https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/which-states-grow-coffee.html Thought I remembered Hawaii coffee from Dirty Jobs.

I have been a coffee drinker all my life. Got sick of paying 3 to 9 bucks for a cup. I got amino acids from GNC, put them in a thermos and drink that during the day. Way more energy and its actually cheaper. Does wonders for my physique and workouts which I could never say for coffee.

Grow your own damn coffee beans then. It’s not Trump’s fault you picked a poor business model.

Of a 10% increase in cost of goods is enough to distrupt their business they are doing it wrong.

$20-$30 for only 12 ounces + $5 shipping. I see where the adjustment needs to happen...

It’s Business Insider.

They will always take the side against Americans. Always.

They need to put Americans down to raise themselves up.

I’m cool with coffee going up. It’s cheap already unless you buy at Starbucks.

Gee can’t you just pass on the 10% tariff price increase just like you would normal market price increases due to drought, bad crops etc.? My wife and I drink coffee from a small family owned roaster and would pay 10% more because we love fine coffee.

Probably adds about $0.15 to a cup of coffee.

So What, you are a slave to Nicauragua. You have known it for 25 years and accepted the risk. He is not going to get his 100% margins and will only get 80.

MSN probably can’t find Wisconsin on the map.
Somehow they found a no-name coffee company who probably donated to Harris.

Coffee used to be a huge business in Hawaii but regulations limited what they can sell and market.

He never said he voted for Trump, wonder why? He talks about the one on the water which he may pay or share it with his supplier. He knows futer containers will have the tariff negotiated in.

Never believe MSN lies.

The real solution is to genetically modify the coffee plant to be cold hardy and grow it in America.

Right now, I’m fine paying tariffs or reducing my consumption. But we could science our way out of the problem.

I’ve done a crazy thing personally. I’ve cut back my coffee consumption. Still get the caffeine and health benefits, just don’t drink as much. It’s crazy but we could all do it.
I am constantly amazed at all the zombies that line up at the coffee huts every day. If they can still do that, things aren’t that bad.

Viêt Nam has offered to end all of its own tariffs and should be in or shortly will be in a no tariff either way with Uncle Sam. Việt Nam is a major exporter of coffee. It is the best in the world. It compares with Hawaiian Kona coffee which used to sell for $100 and up per pound and for a time was down as low as $5 a pound. Instant coffee became actually drinkable when the companies that make it began to use the VN coffee because it was the cheapest coffee there was. Waffle House coffee for some years after Vietnamese coffee came onto the market. It got so the pot could stay hot for an hour and the coffee was still good. Try that with Pure Columbian Coffee. Even Folgers became drinkable for a while. Viêt Nam is now, I believe the third largest exporter. Growing conditions is what makes it one of the best. Kona has similar conditions and Ethiopian too. Store brands have generally improved since the advent of Vietnamese. They all use mixes with high percentage of VN beabs.I don’t mind making a plug for Nguyen Coffee and Trung Nguyen coffee and there are other brands available. Cafe Du Monde is an American brand made from Vietnamese beans and is the coffee of most Vietnamese restaurants in the US. It’s good coffee. And Starbucks doesn’t use VNese coffee. That is a recommendation, I think.
